Clarke county votes on a courthouse bonds issue postponed after concerns about voter turnout and taxpaying citizens. Board of commissioners, led by J M Hodgson, decides delaying to fall to allow broader discussion and eligible voters to participate.
Sheriff Walter Jackson sold at the courthouse a three and a half acre parcel belonging to W. P. Von derau for city taxes. The land on Waser street brought twelve dollars and seventy five cents, bid in by J. D. Moss.
The Athens area enjoyed mild warm weather with no heat prostrations while northern cities faced extreme heat. The piece contrasts Georgia's cooler climate with many northern and eastern cities where temperatures soared and suffering occurred, urging southerners to visit the Sunny South for pleasant summers.
Mrs W E Canning's funeral was held yesterday afternoon at Gainesville. The casket was taken to Alta Vista cemetery for a simple interment after the family's move to Athens. Pall bearers escorted the casket to the train and many friends joined the family to Gainesville.
Rev. Stanley R. Grubb, pastor of the Christair church, will soon travel to Maysville for a series of meetings. Afterward he will attend a Bible Conference in Northfield for about two weeks, then visit Buffalo to see his father.
Athenians spent the day in regular work as many businesses closed for Independence Day. Post office and telegraph offices observed Sunday hours, banks held meetings, and most public events were absent. Fireworks lit the night sky and the county courthouse and city hall saw typical activity, with officials quietly marking the holiday.
A Pease Piano arriving for Mr. Haselton’s display was selected for the use of young ladies competing for the $300 prize at the State University meet. The Pease Piano has been on the market seven years and ranks among the highest. The exhibit is at Haselton's Music Store on College Avenue.
A prominent citizen argues against enforcing a Sunday business ban as a broad social test. He recalls past crackdowns on soda water, ice cream, cigars, and even a colored woman arrested for ironing on Sabbath. He calls for uniform enforcement across all vocations and to halt nonessential commerce on Sunday.
The Ladies' Garden Club of Athens will hold its regular meeting this morning at 11 o'clock in the Young Women's Christian Association parlors at the corner of Mington and Thomas streets. Urgent business calls for prompt attendance by all members.
The long running Speer will dispute ends as the supreme court dismisses the writ of error, affirming the lower court verdict setting up Mrs. Speer's will. Judge Emory Speer and Miss Laura Speer are named heirs with other relatives involved in the estate.
Yesterday afternoon the funeral and burial of Mrs John W Duncan formerly Miss Christy of this city were held after the vestibuled train from Atlanta arrived. Rev Dr Troutman of the First Methodist church conducted services as many friends gathered to mourn the loss and comfort the family.
Members of the Christian Church at Pulaski and Prince avenues are urged to attend a special business meeting held with the 6 o clock prayer service. Several matters will be discussed and acted upon by eligible members.
A number of Elks will attend the Grand Lodge of Elks meeting in Atlantic City next week. Representing the local lodge are E Bancroft E D Wier Hershel Carthers M C O Farrell R B Weir C B Crowe Leah Smith and Dr H B Heywood. Bancroft will visit his son in Richmond Virginia where he attends medical college.
