In snowy northern Italy the Italians launched a brilliant attack against Austro Hungarian lines, seizing strong positions and taking more than 1,500 prisoners and twelve enemy aircraft while other operations were limited. London reports a separate London raid killed 47 and injured 169 with bombs on the outskirts.
A cable received at the state department quotes an extract from yesterday's Berliner Tagblatt stating that Otto Czernin sent a copy of his war address to President Wilson before delivery and that the claim was exploded by the cable. The message explains the refusal to transmit the speech directly.
New York reports wealthiest women cooperating with city food administrator to organize a voluntary food-saving honor system for housewives. The food board announced limits on flour purchases, restricting sales to 24 pounds per household.
Washington reports plans for national registration of women available for farm labor as an early step in securing enough workers for the coming season. New York Jan 29 The United States Steel Corporation paid the federal government more than half of its earnings in the final quarter of 1917 and for the year contributed about 61 million dollars in war profits and taxes to the government treasury.
Six hundred members of the aviation section of the signal corps passed through the Texas camp and the A B station for two hours. They had dinner on Pullman cars, paraded the city for exercise, and many are fifers, mechanics, and helpers ready for work beyond the German lines, with likely deployment soon.

County Fuel Administrator H White reported two mills Prin Mill and Barnett Shoals cotton mills operated Monday on hydro electric current only. State Attorney Hardman interpreted fuel order differently and the matter will be referred to the United States district court after presenting affidavits.
