Ford proposal to lease Muscle Shoals dam sparks critique
Gray Silver, Washington representative for Henry Ford, told Southern Farm Bureau members the federal government lost about 1.5 million dollars by not accepting Ford's offer to lease and run the Muscle Shoals nitrate plants in Alabama. Silver said Weeks delays hindered sending the offer to Congress, prompting bidders to revise bids. He claimed Ford’s plan would lower fertilizer costs by at least half. Delegates from most agricultural states attended the conference to obtain first hand info on government property and related studies.

He noted payments of 6 to 7 percent on five and ten year loans with 5 to 6 percent commissions, and even up to 10 percent in some cases, while loan amounts per acre are being reduced to the minimum.
