Larry Gantt recalls the 1849 gold seekers band led by Charley Shackelford and others, including Major W. Grady and Moody. The narrative ties Athens origins to telegraph subscriptions, a spring near Nuseins corner, and Indian trading sites. Gantt notes local historians’ interest and plans to cover Prospect and Oglethorpe counties.
Estelle Wile, 20, convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting at the post office in Atlanta. Witnesses testified she shot in defense of her mother, but the shooting was deemed without cause. Sentence ranges from one to five years in prison.
The Georgia Markets Conference will meet January 23 to 28 at the State College of Agriculture in Athens. President Andrew M. Soule announced a program featuring national figures and hundreds of bankers, business leaders, and farmers from across the state. The event includes observation tours of the college and University of Georgia campus, with sessions on cooperative marketing, marketing grains and hay, fertilizer use, and cotton marketing. Notable speakers include Governor Thomas W. Hardwick and Loyd B. Tenny among others.
A Georgia federal grand jury indicted 26 men for using the mails to defraud in Atlanta related to an alleged Banco syndicate. Among those named are R. N. Berrien Jr. wanted on a state indictment for embezzlement of school funds, Floyd Woodward and others on state warrants.
The Kiwanis Club held a large turnout at the YMCA for the first luncheon of the year. New officers Charles E. Martin president Joel A. Wier vice president Harvey Stovall treasurer and J. W. Baxter board chairman were installed. An attendance prize went to Dr Dan H. DuPree. The club announced a Ladies Night on January 17 at seven at the YMCA to celebrate Kiwanis seventh anniversary. An attendance contest divides members into four platoons with a free luncheon prize every fourth meeting.
Free lecture and exhibition hosted by Athena Art Association at the Woman's Club Friday at eight. Paul Tarbor will present slides on Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida and the Spanish paintings, with works by Miss Gari Smith and Athena girls Jennie Smith Joy Cobb Lucy Blanton. Portraits, landscapes, and life studies from Athens artists featured.
Major Hierom L. Opie of Staunton Virginia and nearly a dozen overseas veterans told a Senate committee they did not shoot any soldier in the Argonne campaign. Lemuel C Smith, now shell shocked, testified Opie shot and killed a soldier. Further witnesses for and against Opie are expected as the hearing continues tomorrow.
New York reports Edward Stinson and Floyd Bertaut set a 24 hour 19 minute endurance flight at Floyd Bennett Field. They battled freezing cold and blizzard wind, oiling the motor by hand, and praised supportive wife encouragement. They vowed to break the mark again within two years.
Frederick B Engatrum president of Newport Shipbuilding Co presented a lease and operation bid for the government nitrate water power properties at Muscle Shoals. The offer proposes a $36 million expenditure, rapid dam and plant completion, 50 year production, use of excess power to lower fertilizer costs, and at least one plant running within a year of possession.
Dr Alexander Johnson former state official and field agent for the state school for the feeble minded in Vineville New Jersey will be in Athens on Monday January 9 as guest of University Social Service Club to speak on social service issues.
In Savannah, Mrs. A B Parker of Athens was nominated for a directorate seat on the Georgia League of Women Voters during its third annual session. Mrs. Harry Chamberlain of Atlanta was chosen as president. Mrs. Maud Park, national head, spoke Thursday night on Women’s New Venture.
The Fiatrock branch of First Sayings Bank and Trust Company in Nashville was robbed Thursday afternoon of over $2,000 in cash. Two masked men forced William Nix and W L Ber into a rear room, chained them, and collected the money before escaping in a stolen automobile. Nix escaped and fired six shots as the bandits fled.
Officials and the Roosevel t Memorial Committee unveiled a bronze tablet honoring Theodore Roosevelt. The commemorative plaque, presented by his friends, was placed in the department room as a tribute to his leadership and service.
Winthrop L. Marvin, general manager of the American Steamship Owners Association, announced late Thursday that wages of officers would be cut 16 percent with larger reductions for other classes to meet foreign competition. He noted there is no current agreement between the owners association and the ocean boatmen’s union.
Dr William A Lee continued his series at the University addressing life’s meaning in a Y hur Thursday evening talk on What Is Life He urged students to seize present opportunities to grow and to live with faith The lecturer noted immortality as a motive to persevere in worldly endeavors and promised a final lecture titled Outside Looking In Friday night.
The American Engineering council of the Federated American Engineering Societies debated inadequate pay in the U S patent office. It voted to back a nationwide reform campaign to protect American invention and industry. Examiners resignations have left over half the force as young college graduates with little patent law knowledge. The chief examiner's opinion on prior patents is often upheld by judges in infringement cases.

Dublin report says the Dail adjourned to a private session to seek a basis for agreement between treaty supporters and opponents. A peace committee was formed to patch the agreement, and armed men reportedly kidnapped Times correspondent A B Kay but was later rescued by Michael Collins agents and returned unharmed to Dublin.
Senate agricultural bloc officials report President Harding signaled disapproval of bloc backed legislation to add farmer representation on the Federal Reserve Board. Some senators say he indicated a possible veto, while others doubt that was his intent, fearing the move would set a precedent.
The five great navies United States Great Britain France Italy and Japan decree to ban attacks on merchant ships. They will seek international law recognition and require visits and searches of vessels before use of force unless crews are endangered. Submarines must allow safe passage or be allowed to proceed unmolested if rules are followed.
