Elizabeth Nowell, 86, widow of Calvin Gordon Nowell, longtime Monroe resident and devout First Baptist Church member, died Thursday at her Broad Street home. Survived by children Edwin Nowell Sr and Robert Nowell and several daughters, two half-sisters and two half-brothers. Funeral and burial planned in Monroe.

A prominent local businessman announces plans for a modern theatre in the business district of Athens. A lot has been purchased, and plans by a New York architect call for a 2000-seat facility with 1000 cushioned lower floor seats and 600 seats each on balcony and gallery. Sheriff Battle says two U S soldiers were in the mob that beat Will Jane near Ellaville until he died hours later.
