February Mayor and Council Hear Bond Election Plan

The February regular meeting discussed spring street improvements and adopted by Judge Cobb a plan for appraisers to value the current courthouse property. The bond committee recommended adopting the plan to allow city and county appraisers to set a sale price for city purchase. Hodgson and Sledge urged approval for the Thursday council meeting.

St Elmo Lodge Plans Division Meeting and Ceremonial

The Knights of Pythias St Elmo Lodge held a meeting to arrange activities for the upcoming Division Meeting and ceremonial events. The executive committee led by Rev Troy Beatty and others will finalize details during the week as Athens is set for two lively days on February 19 with Knights and Khorassans participating.

Georgia Club set to hear Dr White on civic conditions

Dr H C White of the University of Georgia will address the Young Georgia Club at the State Normal School’s regular meeting Monday morning February 19. A Lake Mohonk Peace Conference member, he will discuss social conditions in the state and beyond, inspiring students. The club plans to invite prominent social workers to speak throughout the year, with Dr White first on the line.

Fire destroys three room tenant house near Pulaski street

Last night a fire gutted a three room house north of the S A L railroad extension of Pulaski street. The dwelling owned by M Farbstein was occupied by a negro named Quilla Wood and his family who woke to find the cottage enveloped in flames. They lost practically all their furniture and the origin of the fire could not be determined.

Chief L E Brooks of Athens police led a coast to coast capture of West Brewer, a known criminal, after a long chase through several states. Det. C E Seagraves arrested Brewer near Augusta and delivered him to Athens police for transport to Asheville NC. Asheville, the county and state offer rewards totaling 850 dollars.

Georgia Athletic Association expands double management plan

Faculty approved new rules for the pushball contest on February 21 and Freshman and Sophomore classes aligned with the plan. The association amended the constitution to allow multiple nominees for football and baseball managers from juniors, with four initial contenders and two winning positions plus two assistant managers to be chosen from sophomores.
