Athens Institutions Win Big in Georgia General Assembly

The Georgia Senate and House preserved the 22 500 appropriation for the University of Georgia and the State Normal School despite many cuts. Hon. Thomas J. Shackelford earned praise for educational gains in Athens. Dispensary amendments passed 27 to 0, with Governor Terrell expected to sign. Franchise tax bill approved 36 to 2.

Miss DuBose plans statewide gift for Georgia ship

Miss Louise DuBose of Athens advances a plan to fund a handsome silver service for the battleship Georgia when commissioned. Governor Terrell backs the idea and suggests a small Georgia Day schoolchild subscription, hoping many Georgians statewide participate to make it a state presentation.

Shackelford Praised for University Support in State Legislature

In a Georgian dispatch Rep T J Shackelford earns praise for backing the State University and the Athena Normal School. A Clarke county favorite, he rose from farmer’s son to lawyer and lawmaker, chairing the house committee on corporations.

Farmer Kicked by Vicious Mule in Nowhere County

John Parker, a farmer on Nowhere road, was kicked by a mule in his stable yard after dusk. He suffered a crushed foot, broken nose, and severe facial injuries, and was transported to a doctor for urgent care with uncertain recovery prospects.

City Council Debates Joint Building. Action Postponed

The regular council meeting weighed a county plan to sell the courthouse to the city for 25000 plus half the city hall lot. Alderman Rucker cited the Home School property offered at 10000 and argued the total for a school building would exceed the city’s means. After lengthy discussion the matter was carried over to the first January meeting awaiting final action.

Mrs Hoke Smith asks The Banner to announce the postponement of the children play Little Lord Fauntleroy to January for charity. Mr R L Moss plans a large store and expanded Commercial Hotel on Broad Street linking to Clayton Street, adding fifty to sixty rooms and modern amenities by spring or summer next year.

Death of William Creighton Veteran Ties to Con federate Past

William Creighton, an elderly Confederate veteran, died Wednesday at his Harris street home after a long illness. Survived by wife and two daughters, his funeral was held at his residence with Rev. W. P. Lovejoy and Rev. J. T. Daves officiating. He was over seventy and interred at Oconee cemetery.

The Doll Exhibition Attracting Mary This Week

The Lucy Cobb cottage hosts a doll exhibition run by Miss Mildred Rutherford. The display showcases dolls from primitive to Russian elegant types with refreshments available. Admission is fifteen cents, plus ten to fifteen cents for refreshments. The Athens Banner doll is the feature of the bazaar.

Wreck on Southern Ties Up Lula Line All Day

A freight train leaving Athens for Lula derailed near Maysville when axle bearings on the engine broke. No injuries were reported and debris was cleared by late afternoon. The line resumed with the first passenger train departing Athens that night.

Hawks Injury Not Serious After Shooting

Sherman Hawkes was shot Tuesday night by Bailiff Beasley but suffered only minor injury. The bullet struck the collar bone and glanced, with the shirt pulling the bullet into the wound. He is rapidly improving and able to be out again.
