The Athens city council set a $1000 near beer license for January 1 to May 1 with hours 8 to 5:30. Debates produced varied proposals from $500 to $2000 and hours, while later actions approved other measures including incinerator acceptance and street light placements as financials show the city edging toward balanced finances.

A Seaboard passenger train collided head on with a northbound freight near Dacula between Athens and Atlanta. One color ed fireman on the passenger train died. Arthur R. Sullivan known as Ted Sullivan, famed University of Georgia athlete, dies in Memphis from pneumonia. He captained both football and baseball teams, played end and pitched, starred on famed Georgia baseball squads, and belonged to Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Funeral services were held in Rome at his brother J B Sullivan's home.
United States Attorney H Snowden Marshall says the National Peace Council funded by Franz Rintelen now held in Britain seeks to inflame munition factory strikes. Council officers C H Canode and William Kramer subpoenaed to testify in Chicago grand jury probe. Former Congressman Fowler and Rep Buchanan of Illinois linked to the council signed a protest to the Federal Reserve Board on the Anglo French loan.
Lee M Bernard 38 a well known traveling salesman for Myers Distributing Company died Sunday after a sudden illness following a period of illness. He was son of Rev H R Bernard and lifelong Athens resident. Funeral set for Tuesday at First Baptist Church with deacons and eight pallbearers named. U C T members urged to attend.
