Lieutenant Colonel David du Bois Gaillard of South Carolina died after four months of illness. The famed soldier engineer had saved the United States millions with his work but health failed just before he could witness the triumph of his efforts.
Lieut. Col. David DuBose Gaillard, U S Army director of engineering on Culebra Cut, Panama, died in Baltimore after four months of illness from overwork. His vigilance is credited with saving the government seventeen million dollars on the canal project. He was born in Winnsboro South Carolina.
The Crystal Theatre presents a slate of shows led by The Fatal Verdict and Beauty and the Ugly One. Gem offers Sam's Despondency while Pilgrim's Progress and Ivanhoe screen in four reels each. Sapho plays six reels Monday.
Washington reports say foreign representatives inquire at the state department about any early settlement of the Mexican crisis. The administration notes no change in policy while preparing for developments from the Rebel success. Ten U S warships patrol the east coast with two extra gunboats to the west. Secretary Bryan denies a Mexico City claim that Queen Wilhelmina would intervene. The United States is believed to have powers’ permission to handle Mexico without interference.
Mexico City reports that Huerta obtained a seven hundred fifty thousand peso loan from an American corporation with Mexican ties. The vice president of the firm reportedly negotiated concessions, with dealings through the finance minister. After initial failure, the American intermediary resumed the deal with Huerta and dispatching papers. Government denies rebel success rumors.
Washington December 65 The House debated the Southern omnibus claims bill totaling 1 729 000 for damages to persons and property from the Civil War. A Republican filibuster blocked action today. Underwood leading the fight pledged passage as soon as possible.
Special correspondence from Atlanta reports Comptroller General Wright's opinion on saloon limits. He says cities cannot exceed state law on licensing and may only omit zones where saloons may operate, though courts have yet to rule. Wright later said telegram was misconstrued and supported city latitude to limit saloons.
Indianapolis Dec. 5 The general strike movement here has been defeated as Teamsters with signed contracts return to work tomorrow after a late meeting of the Teamsters Union. Four non union drivers were shot and a fifth died, with one likely fatally wounded. Many arrests were made and the city reports wagons operating and business normal again.
Snowstorm that enveloped Denver and central Colorado for days is abating. Denver reports four feet of snow blocking trains within a hundred miles, and a coal shortage alarm. Williamson's grocery touts new goods and baking supplies as relief efforts begin.
Jacksonville Florida December 5 General Bennett H Young commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans named April 29 30 and May 1 as the official days of the 1914 reunion here He endorsed the plan to give visiting veterans home lodgings Mayor Swearingen said citizens would occupy tents if needed to provide homes for old soldiers.
Nashville December 65. John W. Thomas Jr., president of the N. C. and St. L. Railroad, remains critically ill at his home with physicians in attendance. Grave hopes are felt for his recovery despite no change in condition tonight.
The Ladies Exchange announces fruit cake sales from now until Christmas with any amount available from a slice to a large cake. White Rabbit flour is promoted as the preferred flour at Williamsons for best results.
Hearings before the House Rules Committee on the proposed equal suffrage standing committee closed in Washington. The panel took no action but will study the issue and issue a report soon. It is reported many members favor extending the authority of the present committee.

Juarez dispatch reports General Villa ordering a rapid retreat of about seven thousand Constitutionalist troops from Chihuahua City toward Villa Ahumada telegraph station to confront advancing Federal forces. Rebels claim fugitives head west toward Palomas near Columbus New Mexico with Generals Mercado Salazar and Nozco among indicted figures. Villa seeks to secure civilian wealth and coordinate with General Carranza in Sonora as federal troops pursue.
