City of Athens closes 1907 with a solid balance sheet due to prudent management and dispensary stock sales. Incoming administration faces fiscal knotty problems but starts 1908 in good condition without dispensary profits, adapting to the state prohibition shift.
The report shows cotton receipts and stocks through September with wagon and railroad totals. For 1907 08 season stock on land 1501 at start, wagon receipts 21471, railroad 40891, total 70023, shipments 50381, stock on hand 22509. Comparisons to 1906 07 show similar totals and stock figures.
Mrs E E Ogletree died after a three day illness at her Boulevard home beyond the city limits. Her husband, left with two small children, was overcome with grief and unable to attend. The body rests at White Hall with funeral postponed to a later date. Mr Ogletree has many friends offering sympathy.
County lawmakers weigh options after dispensary profits end January 1. State convicts returning to the state would increase the common school fund, boosting rural school support but not enough to cover year round costs. A local property tax appears likely to provide steady funding for nine months of school operations.
Carpenters on the University farm contracts walk out demanding a nine hour day and ten hour wage. With no new workers found, work is suspended though officials expect a quick settlement and resumed construction.
Mrs. M. A. Lipscomb of Athens spent Thanksgiving Day with her daughter Mrs. W. D. Ellis Jr in Atlanta. Her visits to Atlanta are a source of pleasure to many friends and she was the center of several informal gatherings this week. DeWitt's Little Early Riser Pills are sold by all druggists.
Memorial services were held at the Colonial theatre by the Athens Lodge of Elks for departed members. The program featured the State Normal Orchestra under Prof. Stanage and readings by Miss Martin and others, with Hon. Clifford M. Walker delivering an address on fraternity, labor, and national unity amid modern challenges.

Yesterday morning the work of tearing down the Washington street school building was commenced. City Engineer Barnett directs a force as crews remove the old structure.
The old building will be torn down in two weeks and materials moved to the Jackson street school lot for later use in the new school. Timber and brick are valuable for interior walls and other parts, with an estimated fifteen hundred dollars in material saved after removal costs. The hotel company will start on the new building within two weeks, before Christmas.
A large Elks group from this city travels to Elberton this morning for lodge installation. Exalted Ruler Bancroft will preside with Hon. R. A. Denny of Rome assisting. Denny is deputy grand exalted ruler for the state and a noted Rome lawyer.
Members of Glenn Lodge of Odd Fellows are forming a new degree team that will perform its first work tonight. Old members are returning and enthusiasm grows. All members should attend and support the new team. officer elections will be held at the meeting tonight.
