Work on the Chase street school building has begun under city engineer J W Barnett. The ten room facility will include a library and is not to be turned over to a building company. Funded by a 175000 bond issue voted last May, with another Lumpkin street project planned.
A large number of motorcycles passed through Athens Friday enroute to Atlanta on the Wistra Journal endurance run. The lead machine number 27 moved through at ten minutes to four with others following, while Marty motorcycles departed Atlanta Thursday for Columbia, going via Augusta and returning through Athens.
Sens admonishing motorists to go slow will be placed near the city schools. Signs have been printed and will be placed in the school district Saturday.
La Follette Wisconsin Republican and Huddleston Alabama Democrat head a private Progressive conference in Washington. Thirteen senators and twenty-six representatives attended as an unofficial bloc forms to adopt a program for a national progressive agenda under the People’s Legislative Service with a Saturday dinner planned for attending governors and leaders.
An enthusiastic YWCA gathering met Friday night at First Baptist to map the year ahead. Miss Ebertha Roolofe and Miss Ada Starkweather from the national body spoke, with programs arranged by Mrs. Frank Lipscomb. Two pageants were presented by the Girl Reserves and University YWCA members. Mrs. Russell Everett, formerly Ruth Wick, gave a work report, and Mrs. John R. White, association president, also spoke.

City Court recessed Friday for a Monday resumption of criminal docket. CarrIy Walton, described as a negro, was tried on two counts for whiskey and given a $75 fine with twelve months probation in one case and a $25 fine with twelve months probation in the other. Will Scott, Pia, Agio Wil named in acquittal of larceny after trust.
Miss Elsie Anthony 16, daughter of Dr. Walter Anthony, suffered facial lacerations when a car driven by B W Hunt collided with the Anthony vehicle on the Dixie Highway ten miles from Eatonton. Dr Anthony, his wife, and children were uninjured. all are in Eatonton for treatment. The accident occurred at a sharp curve near the Anderson home as Hunt, a banker and horticultural leader, and the Anthony party were en route to Wrightsville for a visit.
Nineteen marriage licenses were issued to white couples in November, an increase from the prior month. Licenses granted to Carlton Seagraves and Annie Lee Roberts, W. G. Nineteen traffic cases were docketed by Athens police on Friday and twenty seven on Thursday for violations of the traffic ordinance. Most charges involve cars without tail lights or turning improperly. The force is enforcing the law after years of laxity, with a roundup targeting all street vehicles outside fire limits after nightfall.
James E. Mahoney, convicted of killing his elderly wife for her money, faced execution at the state penitentiary. Reports say he dictated a confession to his attorney. Mrs Mahoney was beaten to death and her body stuffed into a trunk recovered from Lake Union in Seattle. Mahoney had been under arrest on suspicion of knowing of his wife's disappearance. Evidence was circumstantial.
A large audience in Athens heard Dr. Marion Hull announce the Presbyterian Laymen's Movement Friday night on The Atlanta Journal radio. The talk was carried by the Georgian Palm Garden station and heard in homes with receivers. Hull spoke clearly and was easily recognized by locals familiar with him.

Pope Pius works on his Allocution and Encyclical. The Allocution will be delivered in secret consistory December 11. The Encyclical outlines his pontificate’s program and is addressed to all Roman Catholic bishops worldwide. its issuance is postponed to an undetermined date as revisions continue.
A statewide organization of Spanish-American war veterans formed in Atlanta with John F Haunson elected state department commander. C I Fletcher of Augusta named senior vice commander and H J McGuire of Savannah chosen junior vice commander. The group also voted to unite the first region division.
Federal troops guarded a battered municipal building as a two day battle left seventeen dead and many wounded. The crowd protested water shortages blamed on city government, stormed the hall, burned documents, and wrecked records while federal forces secured the building and aldermen’s homes. The Sunday vote was postponed amid calls for federal intervention.
A telegram from New York urged President Harding to back the Dyer Antl lynching bill. The message was sent to James W. Johnson and to the twelve Republican Senate leaders, pressing for action on civil rights legislation.

A devastating fire swept twenty blocks in New Bern North Carolina destroying about 200 residences two churches two warehouses and several stores with losses estimated over one million dollars. The blaze was reported under control early Saturday morning.
Official reports from Munich say Capt. Eberhardt a leader in the Kapp uprising was arrested Thursday at the request of the supreme court and sent to Leipsic. He aided forcing the government’s withdrawal in March 1920 and has since been linked to Austria Munich and various revolts including the Rathenau murder.

Washington reports a rising tide of American exports with Dr Julius Klein of the Commerce Department forecasting a favorable future. October exports reached 372 million dollars, the largest since March 1921, indicating a definite upward trend and growing recognition of foreign trade as a national asset.
