Apparent inaction by armies is blamed on frightful exhaustion after days of furious fighting. Official statements note appalling losses on both sides, with German casualties highlighted by a prisoner who says two regiments, the 112th and 142nd, were merged after heavy losses leaving only sixty men.
The Heligoland island off the Elbe and Weser rivers is noted for strategic naval importance guarding the Kiel Canal. Reports claimed large German naval forces in nearby waters. Tonight there is little land warfare news with the French war office brief and British offices silent on land fighting.
London dispatch says German forces continued bombardment of Malines on August 28 but have not yet seized the city, as reported by Reuters through the Ostend correspondent.
Reports from St Petersburg say Russian forces occupied Allenstein in East Prussia after repelling German reinforcements. In Galicia, Russian advances continued and an Austrian regiment was decimated. Paris fortifications draw intense scrutiny as siege fears rise while London plans to bolster British forces.
The British reportedly sunk two German cruisers and two torpedo boat destroyers off Heligoland with another cruiser set afire and left sinking. No British ships or significant casualties were reported. many German destroyers were damaged.
President Mell of the Athens Bar association calls a convention at the Y M C A on Saturday at 4 30 pm to urge full bar attendance at a ball game between doctors and lawyers. Members with cars to donate to a babies milk and ice fund will receive uniforms at the meeting.
Rev Dr E L Hill of the First Presbyterian church addressed the weekly Bible class at Hiawassee Settlement last night, speaking on the 27th Psalm. The program included brass quartet numbers and refreshments on the Settlement house porch. Several downtown visitors attended.
Warren Kerrigan stars in Man and His Brother at the Classic theater with a sterling comedy A Race for Life. Admission 6 and 10 cents. Clarke County Bank accommodates small borrowers.
A regular Clarke County Medical Society meeting drew the largest attendance in months. The group planned for the Eighth District Association convention to be hosted September 24 and formed a committee to entertain doctors from thirteen counties. The society endorsed the board of health’s expense cut for the city bacteriologist and welcomed Dr. W. W. Brown to practice. A note from Dr. J. P. Proctor reported travel in Germany and Mayo Hospital work to follow. Dr. R. M. Goss returned from Europe and would proceed home to Athens.
The Athens election nears for the September 15 charter ratification with about 600 residents already registered. Judge A J Cobb clarifies the tax cap: general purposes at 1 percent and school taxes at up to 1.34 percent, avoiding any excess. Voters must register at city hall before the deadline and study the new charter’s provisions.
Washington August 28 The plan to base currency notes on war.second house receipts for cotton tobacco and naval stores at 75 percent of face value was approved by a committee of planters bankers manufacturers and dealers. The committee urged efforts to help producers hold cotton until foreign trade reopens and suggested eight cents per pound as a fair loan basis.
