Dr J F Preston of Bristol Tennessee has been invited to preach at the First Presbyterian Church on Sunday at 11 o clock. He has been attending Montreal Conference and fills in during the absence of Pastor E L Hill.
Dr Dan H DuPree of this city was reelected secretary of the Medical Association of the Eighth congressional district at a Washington meeting. New officers include T J Wills as president and L E Roper as vice president. The gathering focused on pellagra with exhibits and a barbecue hosted by Wilkes County.
The first bale of the 1911 cotton crop arrived yesterday by express from Madison Morgan County. Raised by Capt. J. E. Godfrey and shipped by him, it weighed 406 pounds and sold for 60 dollars and 90 cents at Athens through Hardeman and Phinizy for J. M. Rogers representing Inman Akers Inman. This arrival comes three weeks before the 1910 first bale.
Elberton Ga Aug 18 Pierce Hall of Elberton sold the first bale of cotton on the Elberton market Thursday. The 451 pound bale was bought by W T Arnold and Son for 14 1 2 cents.
This afternoon at 4 30 a team from Athens faces the strong Winterville squad in a game at Stallings Park. Admission is free. The Athens lineup features Rawson Vonderau Mayfield Hewell Dillard among others.
A Griffin Daily News item reports Judge Robert T. Daniel ruled jurors over sixty cannot serve on traverse or grand juries, prompting wide comment. A letter seeks public answer, asking why other public officials such as judges and lawmakers are exempt.

Athens officials name Col Shackelford as judge of the city court for a four year term starting September 12 1911. S C Upson is reappointed solicitor, with several other university and state appointments listed for confirmation by the senate.

Yesterday near noon a lightning bolt struck the two story brick Callaway Brothers general mercantile on Prince Avenue near the Normal School causing heavy damage to the second story wall. No one was badly hurt though a store customer was slightly shocked. The storm brought dark dust and smoke and a gusty wind, but the rain curbed further danger.
The Bibb County Agricultural Institute notes growing interest in forming a Georgia State Farmers Institute. The launch will occur at the next Bibb meet with J Phil Campbell and T G Hudson likely on hand. The state fair is expected to host the organization and a corn contest with prizes up to 50 dollars for best yield per acre. The Boys Club of Georgia has 5500 members enrolled.
Mr. Claud Tuck, ill for several days, will be operated on today for appendicitis. He has many friends in the city hoping for a swift recovery. City school notice: fall term begins September 6 with exams for promoted and new pupils on September 4. Normal for white teachers to be held at the High School the week of August 28. The Athens bar is called to meet at the courthouse this morning at 9 o'clock on August 19 1911 to prepare the calendar for the August term 1911 of the city court of Athens. By order of the court. E J Crawford Clerk.
For the benefit of the Oconee Street playgrounds a Monday evening festival will be held at the Oconee Street School building. Refreshments will be served and the Classic City Junior brass band will provide a concert. Organizers hope to make the playground a permanent, well maintained community asset.

Fifty-nine counties have completed tax valuations showing a total net gain of $35,127,190 across 129 Georgia counties. The state’s overall gain is expected near $39 million as the remaining 17 counties report. Coffee county leads with a $1,005,488 gain, rising to $5,168,852 this year from $4,063,384 last year.
In Union Point Georgia Mayor Asa Rhodes and Syrian peddler George Macias faced disorderly conduct charges after a street tax dispute and a published card in the Greensboro Herald Journal. Both were acquitted by Mayor Pro Tem Harold Lamb, ending the case unless an appeal to the Syrian consul is pursued.
