A statewide push promotes showing Georgia at the United States Land and Irrigation Exposition in Chicago this December. The plan asks Athens and Clarke County to donate funds for a display and literature to attract Midwestern farmers to Georgia, with local control over investments and materials.
In Atlanta on August 16 the Georgia House debated a constitutional amendment to require corporate taxes, aimed at speeding school funding. Joe Hill Hall spoke against the arbitration clause. his amendment to remove it passed 94 to 54. The session also advanced Felker's measure to raise the governor's borrowing power from 200,000 to 500,000, approved 129 to 44, with two-thirds needed and achieved. House adjourned with Hall planning a reconsideration.
Thomas E Watson will speak in Bowman on Saturday at 11 oclock in the morning. The event draws hundreds from Bowman and surrounding country and is expected to attract a large Elbert county audience. The Royston band will play and seats are reserved for ladies. A baseball game between Royston and Bowman follows in the afternoon.
Vitagraph's The Price of Gold will be shown at the Elite today. The company is well known to patrons and features an interesting story and matchless acting with Klondyke scenes expected to be worthwhile.
Judge Hamilton McWhorter extends cordial invitations to Athens friends for a summer barbecue at his Greene county summer home at Watsons Springs next Saturday. The hospitable judge hosts these events to honor personal friends and guests enjoy a pleasant summer gathering.
The Georgia Senate passed the general appropriations bill in its committee form after $80,000 in total cuts. The reduction affects Soldiers Home Tuberculosis sanitarium University of Georgia Georgia Tech Georgia Normal College Agricultural college and common schools, lowering total appropriations from 452 500 to 372 500. The vote was 36 to 1. The academy for the blind the school for the deaf and dumb and the state sanitarium retained their allocations.
Clarke county court revisors examine jury lists amid debate on age sixty exemption. Judges note age as legal excuse rather than obligation. past jurors over sixty who have recently served may be excused from all cases. Judge Brand requests removing such names from the pool to ensure eligible jurors.
Last night around 10:30 Rev. H C Compton officiated a quiet marriage for Missee Berryman and Joe Martin in the rear of a Clayton street cafe. The couple, living near the city, accompanied by the bride’s parents, were wed during a prayer gathering after obtaining a license.
Athens Georgia watermelons weighed twenty to thirty pounds sold for a nickel. A Baltimore clipping claimed Georgia melons were inferior. The reply from S Bernstein asserts Athens melons are among the finest, noting a seventy-two pound recent shipment and defending quality despite shipping losses.
Mr. F. J. Willingham has returned to the city and will resume management of the Singer Sewing Machine Co. in this city.
