Reports circulated yesterday that Seaboard Air Line was sold and control may pass to Rock Island San Francisco group or Southern Railway. A later notice claimed Southern Railway as buyer with official transfer soon, promising improvements for line residents.
The county voters will decide on issuing 190000 in bonds to macadamize every mile of public road in Clarke County. All roads will be paved equally with 12 foot wide macadam, including Athens and rural areas. The Banner urges a full turnout and expects no opposition, predicting passage with unanimous support.

Floyd Payne, the man who beat and robbed an elderly Black man near Statham last May, was tried in Jackson court this week, found guilty and sentenced to twenty years in the penitentiary by Judge Russell. Payne was captured by Athens police and confessed in Jefferson after his capture by Officers Barpee, Cook, and Jackson. His attorney, Judge George C. Thomas, had pleaded guilty for mercy after Payne maintained innocence earlier. Chief Culp will pursue the $100 reward offered by the state for Payne's capture with Governor Torrall.
The annual statement from Central of Georgia shows earnings up 1 116 000 the largest increase 18 percent in its history. A 5 percent dividend on first income bonds was declared. Gross earnings stand at 1 164 4700 with net income 2 841 731 and total income 2 534 152. The report notes a profitable year, with miles operated unchanged. The death penalty in the piece refers to Backlen's Arnica Salve for burns and sores.
A warrant issued by Judge Jas F Foster led to the arrest of Alex Philips of Harmony Grove on a complaint by Mrs. Ollie Mathews of East Athens alleging he enticed her 15 year old daughter Ethie Mathews from their home. The case, described as sensational, will be heard before Judge Voatrr with authorities transporting both defendant and the girl to Athens.
At a county board meeting yesterday A. S. Johnson was chosen to succeed the resigned W. D. Kelley as superintendent of the county farm. The commissioners praised Kelley’s splendid tenure and expressed regret at his departure, adding that Johnson appears a worthy successor.
In Atlanta yesterday two baseball games were played against Birmingham. Atlanta lost the first game 1 to 7 and won the second 3 to 1, finishing with a split for the day.
At the League of Georgia Municipalities convention in Macon, Mayor J F Rhodes outlines water and lighting rate challenges. He cites Athens history, endorses universal meter systems, warns on hydrant charges, and notes municipal ownership cuts lighting costs while stressing varying city needs.
The Athens Banner reports no regular monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting as only three members attended, about one fifth of quorum. The paper laments apathy, notes heavy correspondence for new residents, and urges member cooperation or possible dissolution, inviting opinions from local business leaders.

Mr James Waters longtime county president died Tuesday afternoon after a paralysis attack. Residents described the sorrowful scenes as family tried in vain for a sign from the stricken man. The funeral was held yesterday at Princeton church with Rev E D Stone preaching. he leaves a wife six children and many friends.
Joe Ewart, the well known Kentucky horseman, arrived in the city with ten stables at the fair grounds. He will run his string on the track within days as grading is finished and the roller and railing work proceed. Local observers expect the Athens track to be among the nation's best.
