A city council introduced a resolution on Monday afternoon to refund Chief of Police Beavers 175 for expenses from a San Francisco trip to attend the national convention of police chiefs. The measure was tabled on a vote of 11 to 6.
An elderly Black woman, Mary Bennett, was found beaten to death in her home near Ocohee Street. Her son, Henry McCoy, about 45, initially questioned, was arrested on suspicion and held at the station. The axe used was in the room with bloodied cloth bits tied to the victim’s head. Police report McCoy and his mother had recent disputes and money motive is noted.
