Maysville Georgia August 5 Marshal W E Reynolds was shot multiple times by Harley Young whom he tried to arrest on E Garrison’s farm near town. Young had been arrested Monday for a Sunday assault but was released on bond to return home.
Judge R. C. Orr disposed of routine matters this week and adjourned to Saturday morning for further cases. Letters of dismission in administration and leave to sell lands of estates were the main acts of this term.
Deputy Collector Oglesby from McDonough and Atlanta represented the internal revenue department during an official visit yesterday. Clarke County Bank accommodates small borrowers.
Belgian defense at Liege repulsed German attackers amid heavy fighting. Forts at Liege resisted with no damage reported. one Belgian squadron drove back six German squadrons. Reports note thousands dead or wounded and British aid anticipated soon.
Provisional President Carbajal and Generals Istiano and Carranza reach a full agreement on transferring the government to the constitutionalists. Reports from Paris and Brussels describe Belgian forces destroying two German regiments at Uhlann and German opposition near Liege repulsed. Canada calls for 20,000 volunteers, while Holland declares martial law. The German embassy in St. Petersburg is wrecked, and President Wilson offers his good offices to the European powers amid the conflict.
Atlanta August 5 The Senate passed a substitute for Senator McNeil s divorce bill requiring judges in undefended cases to appoint defense counsel and treating actual violence as grounds for divorce. The mediation measure was tabled. The cigarette sale ban bill failed to report after a four to four committee vote. The tax rate under the new law will be lowered and Governor Slaton signals possible cuts below five mills. A Wimberly anti trust measure received a favorable committee report despite opposition.
At the monthly meeting led by Mayor Dorsey with all but Alderman Pitner present the council adopted the finance committee report reducing Citizens Bank tax assessment to match corrected county returns. They authorized a check protector purchase, resumed voucher double checks, and set an early charter vote once the governor signs. They also collected Empire Laundry occupa tion tax and discussed Milledge Street widening rights of way and paving progress. Lightning arresters were ordered for the water works and the Du Pree building flue issue was assigned to the city engineer for resolution. Sewer connections and brick flue work were also addressed.
