Miss Lucy Stanton of Atlanta sends paintings to the Appalachian exposition women’s department. She studied abroad, now lives in Athens, and paints southern life and scenery. Her North Georgia and North Carolina bits inspire many pictures, including miniatures of notable southerners and a striking group of darky sketches. A famed miniature depicts Joel Chandler Harris.
Mr. J Warren Smith of Watkinsville a rising young businessman and cashier at the Watkinsville bank will move to Athens this month and from September will be officially connected with the American State Bank formerly University Savings Bank. He is well known here with many friends glad to see him become an Athens resident and active in local business and social circles.
Mr. J. R. Hunter of this city makes about a hundred artificial acorns from remaining Toombs Oak wood. Each charm features a brass swivel and can be used as a watch charm or fob. The oak stood near the University of Georgia chapel and was struck by lightning twice. After the final storm only a decaying stump remained. leftover wood was gathered and sold as keepsakes at a dollar each.
Bob Cole the colored comedian and songwriter walked into Catskill creek with two friends this afternoon and drowned before help could arrive. He had been ill and despondent recently, and his act as a tramp vocalist was well known. Born in Athens Georgia about 45 years ago, Cole performed across the country.
In Athens city court Judge West tried George Craft a crafty purloiner of fowls. He was caught with feathers on him and the owners identified the plumage. Craft fined 75 dollars. default means three-quarters on the chain gang.
Joe Smith, described as a colored man, was sentenced to three quarters of a year in default of payment of a $75 fine after being found guilty of larceny from the house on Sunday. He allegedly took a bottle of ginger ale from Orr Drug Co. on a Sunday.
