The Associated Press reports about 123000 volunteers screened for Roosevelts proposed expeditionary force, with about 60 percent from Southern states. The item notes enrollment results at headquarters and broad enthusiasm for American involvement in the conflict.
Athens leads national effort in wartime canning and food preservation. A city council and county commissioners are urged to fund a local canning plant and potato house, with a proposed five hundred dollar donation from both city and county to start machinery and building. The plan, championed by Chamber of Commerce leaders including President Tibbetts, aims to prevent food shortages and waste by rapid canning as vegetables are harvested. The chapter had long supported a scholarship and, through appeals to officials, helped obtain an appropriation that built the Elijah Clarke Chapter Infirmary. The D A R remains a steady friend to the teacher training institution.
In Opelika Alabama a formal proclamation from General Harrison of the United Confederate Veterans confirms the reunion will begin June 5 in Washington City as planned. Also notes from Milledge Avenue game and local ad lines about fish and produce prices.
London reports the American steamer Mongolia sank a German submarine in British waters on April 19 after gunfire shattered its periscope. Captain Rice described the submarine sighting, attempted ram, and subsequent submergence as Navy gunners aboard the Mongolia participated. The ship, 13,000 tons with U.S. Navy gunners, faced no government comment on the incident.
Paris and London dispatches describe Dunkirk under bombardment by German destroyers with British and French patrols engaging. A French torpedo boat was sunk and a major sea fight left German destroyers damaged and several ships sunk or disabled. British destroyers Swift and Broke fought heavily in the English Channel with torpedoes and ramming. Casualties were light for the British.
New York April 25 internal revenue agents seized narcotic drugs valued at 500000 dollars smuggled into the United States from England and Canada. Two Russians are under arrest in connection with the seizure.
W. J. Ford, a white man, was arrested yesterday by police and jailed pending charges of breaking a glass case and stealing several hundred morphine tablets from a local establishment. He is said to reside in Atlanta.
The mayor convenes a special city council meeting tonight at 8 o'clock with county commissioners and Chamber of Commerce reps to discuss the proposed canning factory in the city.
Davidson defeated Georgia two to one in a late AP report. No other details were provided. Clemson fell to Tech 3 2 while Mercer and Auburn open their series today in Albany. Georgia team expected home tomorrow morning.
