Transportation and Development in Athens Banquet Address
President W. W. Finley of the Southern Railway delivered a forceful speech at the Athens Chamber of Commerce banquet on transportation's role in growth. He tied ancient Athens to modern railways, stressed highways of public opinion, and warned that rail capacity must exceed demand to sustain progress. He linked cotton goods, fruit and vegetable markets, and University of Georgia offerings to transport, noting 1907- era purchasing power declines and downstream economic effects.
