The Athens Chamber of Commerce holds its regular monthly meeting at the city hall tonight at 8 30. Members will discuss the annual banquet plan to make it a delightful and profitable event and energize local efforts for a banner year of progress in 1911. New members are welcome and urged to Present themselves for admission.
Mrs A V Gude of Atlanta donates 75 to establish the Sophia Sargent Boggs scholarship for State Normal School seniors needing help. Loans range at a per cent rate to be repaid as convenient, supporting high achieving students. Several other local groups also fund scholarships through the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs and allied organizations. Texas onions advertised at three pounds for 25 cents from Arnold and Abney.
Woodmen from nearby camps invited to memorial exercises Sunday April 16 with Uniform Bank of Atlanta providing drill and state head camp officers to speak. Local and visiting sovereigns and relatives urged to attend. public welcome. J. D. Severns C. C.
Washington April 13. The bill by Rep Tribble of Georgia proposes a rural parcel delivery system via the post office. It authorizes a department to handle packages up to 25 pounds on rural routes with two cents per first pound and one cent for each additional pound. It extends transport of agricultural products to all mail routes nationwide without interfering with existing postal rates.
A young widow, Mrs. Fannie Knight of Walton county, was assaulted by an unknown Black man near Bostwick while her parents were away. She was found unconscious in the yard with a sack over her head. Police arrested several suspects as they search for the assailant.
The timetable lists Holy Communion at 7 30 a m and again at 7 30 a m tomorrow. A special Good Friday service is set for 11 00 a m with evening prayer and meditation at 5 20 p m. Rector Troy Beatty signs the notice.
Tonight is the regular annual meeting of all Knight Templars and officers will be elected for the year ahead. Knights are asked to attend as the May entertainment of the Georgia grand commandery in Athens will be discussed and work begun.
A nine month old child of Mrs. L. S. Dye died yesterday at their Washington street home after several days illness. The funeral is set for 10:30 this morning at Oconee cemetery with Rev. S. R. England of Young Harris Memorial Methodist Church officiating.
Athens grand jury returned true bills charging twenty seven dealers with violating the state prohibition law by selling near beer. Indictments include licensed sellers and silent partners. cases hinge on transactions after a tacit agreement with prohibitionists. The state plans to prove intoxication potential to press direct violation charges.
The Ladies Auxiliary plans a key meeting at 4 20 PM at the YMCA to organize funds for hiring an assistant secretary to oversee the boys department. Mothers and women of Athens attended a prior event praising the YMCA work and urging better facilities and supervision.
Georgia delegates led by Chancellor Barrow and Prof Wooster join the second International Congress on the Welfare of the Child in Washington from April 25 to May 2 1911. Mayor Rowe urged cooperation and city delegates. trip Atlanta to Washington departs April 24 in a Southern Railway sleeping car for 27 45 with dining car service.
A new bakery named Thompson's Bakery begins operation in the Pink Morton building at 280 and 282 Hull Street. Baker Thompson, with long local experience, offers sanitary, inspected facilities and wagon delivery. To introduce itself, the shop sells three loaves of bread for ten cents today only.
Dr W P Betts died early yesterday at his daughter's home. Funeral at 3 PM from the First Methodist Church with Rev Dr Troutman officiating. Interment in Oconee cemetery. Pallbearers are eight sons L N Betts family, plus daughter Mrs Alex Hargrove. Betts, 61, long Athens resident and noted dentist, mourned by Masonic lodge members who will attend and conduct the burial service.
Athens fans expect a top notch Saturday showdown at Sanford field as local high school meets Elberton in a crucial prep game. Elberton arrives hot from defeats of nearby towns while Athens aims to slim a recent strong run and cap a week with Marist College of Atlanta on Easter Monday.
