The City Court of Athens shows a fiscal year where expenses totaled 8982.60 while county returns reached 10340.00, leaving a net gain of 1357.40. The court disposed 426 cases including 172 civil matters with large potential county revenue non collectible, and fines contributed to the county treasury.
W W Memminger of All Saints church Atlanta will deliver the annual literary address to Lucy Cobb Institute’s graduating class. The baccalaureate address is set for Monday May 26. Memminger spoke recently to Atlanta women at Mrs Milton Dargan’s home on Cyrano de Bergerac and discussed operatic renditions by Henderson and the Metropolitan Opera company engagement in Atlanta.
Athens High School and the A H S and the A of A C square off against Richmond Academy after Georgia’s away. Sanford Field hosts the 3 30 PM game with 25 cent admission. Athens boasts strong players, including Erwin, Mangrum, and Weatherly, in a bid for a crowd showing.
Mr. W. T. Lucian Lamar Knight, a famed South writer and historian, is appointed by Governor Brown to compile Georgia colonial and Revolutionary records and Confederate records. He succeeds Allen D. Candler and William J. Northen in the post, with a $2400 annual salary. Knight, former editor of the Georgian, has broad literary credentials and Georgia roots.
Mrs. Lella A. Dillard vice president of the Georgia Woman's Christian Temperance Union and college secretary of temperance will be in Athens for three days next week. Sunday evening she speaks at the Christian church. Monday and Tuesday she lectures at Lucy Cobb Institute and State Normal School. Monday afternoon she addresses the Athens WC T U. Members invite all interested women. She is described as a charming speaker and promises a treat.
The Central of Georgia Railway conducts educational cooperative work via test farms linked with the Georgia State College of Agriculture. The Manufacturers' Record highlights Alabama and Georgia farming gains, praising the railroad for its influential test farms and Dr. A. M. Souis remarks on their importance to regional agriculture.
The Y P M S of Oconee Street Methodist Church meets Friday night at 8 o clock. All members are urged to attend and welcomes others. Tender beans available for dinner deliveries by Arnold and Abney.
The Red and Black baseball squad leaves for Vale Blease to play Clemson Tigers in a two game series this afternoon and tomorrow. Coach Cunningham brings along recruits while Bowden Hutchens Hawes Brown and Erwin cover positions as the team plans to return Sunday to meet Michigan at Sanford Field. Games start at 3:00 on Monday and Tuesday and 7:00 for the Michigan series due to early drills for the University Battalion inspection.
The Godfrey de Bouillon Commandery Knights Templar will hold a convention at the usual place tonight. A Temple degree will be conferred and all Sir Knights are urged to attend.
A special arrangement at the Majestic presents the Pathe three reel color film Notre Dame de Paris based on Victor Hugo. The tale follows Esmeralda the gypsy Esmeralda and Quasimodo the bellringer as Frollo moves from passion to fatal confrontation in dramatic scenes.
Mr T M Burns, two years with Miller's in Athens, left the area as the Miller company quit the local business. He has taken a position with Patterson in Atlanta, a leading southern undertaking house. His family stays until mid summer and the children finish school here. Burns will visit on weekends.
The Clarke County Medical Society schedules its semi monthly meeting at the city hall Friday night April 4 at 8 o clock. Members and medical friends are urged to attend to share counsel and broaden usefulness in fighting human ills. Last meeting drew fifteen doctors. The program will be announced at the gathering.
The Lawrence Players presented A Southern Play and A Georgia Rose at the Colonial Theater last evening. Carol Reed and Herschel Wiss stood out as vivid dancers in color parts while Gail Hamilton shone as The Rose Babe Howard. The play unfolds in a single charming setting across four acts with strong ensemble work.
The Southern, Seaboard, Gainesville Midland, Central of Georgia and Georgia railroads will close all freight offices every Saturday at 1 PM from now until September 1. The change follows years of a popular half holiday tradition letting staff attend games or prepare for Sunday.
