Father in Felon Stripes Holds Daughter at Funeral in Tragic Scene
A convict father, shackled at the ankles, sat holding his 14 year old daughter Mamie Binns as she lay dead. He was allowed to attend the funeral at Oconee church after being brought from a chain gang camp 25 miles away with a guard. The scene unfolded Sunday noon as the community witnessed a sorrowful reunion before the burial at Oconee cemetery.

The Porter case against the City of Athens, appealed to the Georgia Court of Appeals, was withdrawn and the lower court’s verdict affirmed. Judge Brand ordered the Porter sentence carried into execution, and Porter paid a $200 fine after being taken to police headquarters. A later case remains before the Court of Appeals. Also, the new Catholic church in Athens was dedicated by Bishop Kelley with large attendances from Atlanta and other cities and a high mass by Father Kennedy.
