The telephone typewriter links General Police Headquarters and Manhattan precincts with instant printed messages at receiving desks. Over 100 sets enable headquarters to broadcast to all precincts, aiding rapid responses such as a $10 000 merchandise theft recovered within 45 minutes. Similar systems go to St Louis Boston and twelve Connecticut cities.

Til Taylor Statue Headed for Pendleton Winter Arrival

The Til Taylor Memorial statue nears completion and will arrive early this winter in Pendleton. Sculptor A. Phimister Proctor reports high praise from Rome and Brussels, aided by authentic gear and photos. The statue will stand in Til Taylor Memorial park beside three reflecting pools funded by local gifts and park improvements.

Pete Slays Brown Bear at Bingham Springs Hunt

Pendleton resident M M Peterson and M L Watts of Athena spent time at Peterson summer home at Bingham Springs. Pete shot and killed a ferocious bear weighing about 24 pounds, reportedly saving Umatilla river livestock from extinction. Marvel Watts confirms the weight of the beast.

Idaho Hunting Trip From Athena In Selway District

Fay LeGrow Sam Pambrun and Geissel along with Everett Rothrock left Athena Tuesday morning for a hunting trip in Idaho's Selway district. Two trucks carried their camp and pack outfit. Marion Hansell was detained by business matters and could not join. Last year the Athena party had a very successful hunt in the same district.

The Weston Leader reports tentative Umatilla county potato show dates set for November 16 and 11 to allow mountain growers and Yakima exhibitors access. The Weston event would be between the Portland Livestock Ex position and the Spokane potato show if adopted.

Athena High School Defeats Pilot Rock 12 0 In Season Opener

Athena High School blazed to a 12 to 0 victory over Pilot Rock in the season opener. Gross scored the first TD from 25 yards after a quick Athena drive, with Myrick adding a 62 yard TD run. Pilot Rock showed flashes but failed on conversions and could not close the gap as Crowley sparked a late sprint thwarted by a Pilot Rock interception.

Ministers Speak At W. C. T. U. Meeting

The W C T U heard two brief speeches on anti alcohol campaigning by Mr. Dow Baptist minister and H Jackson Perry Christian minister at the home of Mrs D A Eaten. Eleven members and three visitors attended. refreshments were served. Delegates to the county convention were elected. Transportation and a pot luck lunch were arranged for October 5 at the Athena Hotel. Voter registration reminders were given.

Weston farmer Alick Johnson dies at home during conversation

Alick Johnson, a well known Weston farmer, died at his farm early yesterday while talking with his son Karl. He had been ill for months but his death came as a surprise to family and friends. Funeral plans had not been set at press time.

Burglars Open Safes In Athena

Burglars opened two safes in Athena Friday night and took about $60 in cash and Marion Hansell's $2,000 diamond studded shooting trophies. The Rogers and Goodman hardware store safe was breached through the coal chute and cracked by disabling the combination. A Zerba Garage safe yielded a revolver and small change. the cash drawer was pried out and smashed open. The sheriff’s office was alerted early Saturday. no suspect has been found. This raid ranks among the largest in three months of county burglaries, with one bandit killed at Pilot Rock during another robbery.

Bob Crosby Crowned King of Cowboys at Cheyenne Round-Up

Bob Crosby, three time Roosevelt trophy winner, claimed the king of the cowboys title at the Cheyenne Round-Up closing Saturday. He earns permanent possession of the silver trophy after three wins. Crosby previously took the prize in 1925 and 1927. Additional honors include Hamley belt, world champion steer roper and calf roper, with other 1920s winners listed.

Mrs. W. H. Keen Dies in Spokane After Illness

Mrs. W. H. Keen, born July 14 1884 in Missouri, died Monday in Spokane after hospital care following Brights disease. She taught in a district near Athena before marriage to Mr. Keen and lived on a farm. Survived by husband, a daughter Mrs. J. M. Bentz, Cecil Wilson, three sisters, three brothers. Funeral held in Spokane Wednesday.

Four Hunters Return From John Day Trip With Bucks

Five men left Athena Sunday for the John Day Hunting rounds and returned Wednesday afternoon with two buck deer. Amos O'Dell Lloyd Miecener Herb Parker Dick Winship were among the party as trophies of their stunt.
