Geneva report: Spain formally withdraws from the League of Nations effective two years from receipt of the notice. The move follows a note delivered through the Spanish consul at Geneva. Germany joins the League amid renewed Franco German hopes for lasting peace.
Torrential rainfall totaling eight to eleven inches caused rivers and streams in Wastern Kansas to overflow for miles. Burlington Neosho Falls and Madison suffered flood damage as Neosho and Verdigris valleys saw widespread property losses. About 150 square miles were affected with livestock losses reported. authorities expect over two million dollars in damages while residents in uplands found refuge and warnings were issued.
Washington DC report shows September 1 conditions point to a corn crop of 2,697,872,000 bushels, up from a month ago and higher than last year. Spring wheat is seen at 212,100,000 bushels, with winter wheat at 626,482,000 bushels, reflecting revised estimates for the current season.
Salt Lake City Republican state convention renominated Reed Smoot to succeed himself as United States senator from Utah by acclimation on Friday.

Six Portland automobile oil dealers face complaints charging unfair competition and substitution of goods under trade names. Investigations by District Attorney Stanley Myers found low grade oil sold as high grade, with profits of about 15 cents per quart. The case cites sealed containers and damaged engines from inferior lubricants, and several oil firms warned motorists nationally. Trial urged within a week.
City council installs two dummy traffic cops at the Main and Third streets corner. Turning markers and a white line on the pavement ease the sharp turn that caused at least three car crashes into the Athena Hotel front.
Coach Stolzheise announced the opening day of school will start football practice with fifteen men responding. He expects three weeks of stiff work to shape the squad. no permanent positions yet. Enthusiasm and large crowds marked the final night of the three day Walla Walla county fair. Prescott community earned blue ribbon honors for a display of grains fruits and dairy products as the upper county team scored 50 points on a 1000 point scale.

Major Schoff of the Canadian Mounted Police spoke at the high school on Friday September 10 delivering a talk illustrated by a large relic collection. The display included skins of lions bears leopards zebras and alligators plus robes from African and Indian women and uniforms from various armies including a claimed Napoleon era Waterloo uniform. Although past sixty he remains active for the King and plans school visits through winter before resuming duties in Canada next summer.
Fay LeGrow wears a handsome belt presented by H. W. Collins president of the Round-Up Association. The leather is elaborately stenciled with a silver buckle inlaid with gold and filigree engraving. LeGrow’s name is cleverly designed on the buckle.
The Baptist parsonage formerly home of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Watts has received exterior repainting this week. J. C. Harwood led the work with help from Dean Pinkerton.
The list selects nine beacon and emergency landing sites along the Pasco Elko air mail route with caretakers named for each location. Selections await Commerce Department approval, with further intermediate lights planned between locations and data to Washington DC after approval.
E A Dudley severed the middle finger tip while adjusting an electric pump at home Tuesday morning. He was treated by Dr Sharp who amputated the loose part and dressed the wound. Fay LeGrow quipped that Dudley still had his trigger finger.
Friday morning Dean Dudley journeyed to the mountains and at lunch time came back to Athena with the first deer of the hunting season. He was accompanied by Everett Rothrock. Dudley and friends feasted on venison steaks and hailed him as the luckiest hunter in the bailiwick.
While deer hunting in the mountains on Saturday, Dale Stephens and Norman McIntyre spied a bear. The animal came within twenty feet of Dale but he could not fire in time before the bear disappeared into the brush.
L A Stanley county surveyor reports Legion Mountain as the highest peak in the Wallowa range at 10 076 feet based on barometer readings. Mat terholme peak follows closely at 26 feet lower and Eagle Ohp sits just under 10 000 feet. Mrs Roy Currey of La Grande accompanied the party as the first woman to reach Legion peak, a climb described as steep rock and cliff and quite difficult.
Ten growers in Walla Walla county will plant one pound of albit wheat seed each this fall for experimental purposes. One pound plants about one sixtieth of an acre and can yield around ten pounds of seed under favorable conditions, county agent A W Kasten reports. Albit is the smutless winter wheat developed at the state experimental station.
Athena prepares for a near empty town as business suspends and residents travel to Pendleton for the Round-Up closing day event.
Beginning October 1 the southern terminal of the Elko Pasco air mail route shifts from Elko to Salt Lake City on a temporary schedule through March 1. Departures from Pasco at 6:00 a m Boise 9 20 a m Salt Lake City 12 50 p m, return from Salt Lake City 9 45 a m Boise 1 15 p m Pasco 4 55 p m. The change aims for earlier Pasco arrivals and avoids the Owyhee mountains over Boise Elko, reducing winter danger.
West on Leader reports progress on a mountain road nine miles from Toll Gate to Table Rock with seven miles finished. Maximum grades reach seven percent with most at five. Automobiles can reach Bone Springs high point overlooking Walla Walla river headwaters. Twenty men six horses and a tractor operated by forest service in this project.
Hundreds of Winnipeg students and clerks left on leave to help harvests in Calgary Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Thousands more workers were needed as western Canada mobilizes. About 1895 U S workers joined the effort and more were en route from the south as immigration officials report.
The Walla Walla district has paid over $6000 toward the stadium project. A 40 acre tract is transferred to the district Whitman college and the Stadium club. Erection of seats for fall games is underway and nearby streets are being paved.
The Weston Leader reports Mary Ef Reeves an aged pioneer of Oregon was found dead in her bed at her daughter’s home near LaCrosse Washington. She was the widow of Jesse Reeves and highly respected in the community.
Rome reports Benito Mussolini escaped a third assassination attempt within a year when a marble cutter, Ermete Giovannini, 26, sprang from a recess and hurled a bomb at his closed limousine. The blast injured eight bystanders and damaged nearby glass as the car sped away. Giovannini was captured.
George Michel a 40 year old French swimmer broke the world record for crossing the English Channel in 11 hours and 6 minutes. He started from Cape Gris Nez at 3:32 p m and reached St Margarets Bay at 7:53 p m. This beat Ernest Vierkotter's 12 hours 42 minutes mark and marked his 11th channel attempt.
In The Jewish Tribune David Trietsch reports the world Jewish population at about 15,080,000, a 160 percent rise since 1881. The United States is home to 4,400,400 Jews, Poland to 4,000,000, and Nisan to 8,600,000. New York City leads with 2,000,000 Jews, Warsaw 400,000, followed by Chicago and Vienna with 800,000 each.
Paris reports cabinet approved plan to reduce permanent officers by 2700 and temporary by 1200, lowering total army personnel to 128000, seven thousand below prewar levels. The reforms also raise conscript minimum age to 21 and seek a one year compulsory service.
