London dispatches report General Kuropatkin returning to Mukden after inspecting Tie Pass fortifications. Russian delays, costly efforts to slow the Japanese, and fierce night attacks mark a heavy retreat south of Mukden. Chinese bandits terrorize the region while Kuroki’s force endures 12 days of hard fighting under extreme heat.
In Clar lyn Idaho on Sept 11 J W Eddy tried to ferry his wife two children across Clarke Fork river. The boat capsized. Eddy saved his wife and infant then tried to rescue his two sons Glen and Leland. Glen sank before help reached him. Leland was saved. Searchers seek Glen’s body as community grieves another death at Sandpoint.
Maine voters favored Republicans with William Cobb leading for governor by about 34 000 over Hill as early returns from all four districts show GOP wins. Democrats likely gained seats in both chambers but remain solidly Republican and may re elect Senator Eugene Hale. Voter turnout was the heaviest since 1858.
John Wilson, a farm hand formerly employed by J. B. Todd, was arrested for forging a $27 check carried by Griffin Morrell, saloon keepers. He fled after the bank discovery but was rearrested while still intoxicated and asked for a chance to repay the sum.
Birdie McCarty of Lakeview accepted 6000 in compromise against James D. Herr yford, rich stockman, in the breach of promise suit. A jury had awarded 22000 annually a year earlier, with the verdict appealed and the case continuing.
Athena September 18 reports a quiet local wheat market with one buyer noting prices cling around 70 cents and activity is slow. He adds there is plenty of wheat for present demand.
The First National Bank of Athena reports a September 6 close with total assets at 916 182.08 and deposits 285 195.95. Loans and discounts stand at 126 082.25 while surplus and undivided profits total 10 804.89. Cash and equipment 159 787.66 and bank building value 7 519.80.
Charles McBee sold land near Pendleton and irrigated a 16 acre alfalfa tract. He measured 181 tons of hay from 16 acres by Sept 1 at $7 per ton, netting about $960 after stacking costs. The report notes similar yields exist across Butter Creek meadows.
President French returns from trips to Upton and Wallowa counties encouraged by outlook for large attendance at the normal school. He enrolled graduates from east of the mountains and teachers signaled mid year entry. He then plans institute work in Harney Grant Malheur and Baker counties. The town of Lawton in Grant County is noted as vanished after a foreclosure sale.
