Deacons Use Metal Checks to Encourage Communion
A historical note describes New England churches where deacons circulated through aisles after services to hand out metal checks to eligible communicants. The practice aimed to prompt future participation at the Lord's Supper and verify that entrants received the check before partaking of bread and wine. The piece also cites a riddling anecdote about herrings and a news item on robberies in federal offices.
