The Pendleton murder of Chris Ellis remains unsolved with no clear motive. Sheriff Taylor says no information points to a suspect. the only clue is a footprint seen as the killer and Ellis walked together from his home to the crime scene.
Washington dispatches report Kuropatkin ordered retreat from the first line to a fortified position around Liao Yang after dawn to midnight assaults by Japanese. Oyama cites heavy losses as Japanese forces press the Russian right and center and pursue retreating troops toward fortified southern positions.
The Oregonian reports foreign buyers are quiet as Atlantic grain strength falters. Northwest export trade shrinks while eastern and San Francisco demand rises, with high freight rates and tight milling wheat prices lifting Walla Walla values. Portland and Puget Sound shipments set a new August record at 616,106 bushels.
W P Leach of Weston mountain says five years of hay growing outperforms wheat with 116 acres yielding timothy at 1.5 tons annually per acre. He markets 115 to 1265 tons yearly, earning about 1800 dollars plus feed, with production cost not exceeding 2.25 dollars a ton. About 15 000 tons of baled timothy hay are shipped to Walla Walla and Sound markets this season as cars fill quickly.

J W Morrow of the O R N Co seeks a reduction in road mileage assessment from 12000 to 5600, asked hearing be delayed until the county court meets next week. Mrs Susan Welch asks reconsideration of several lots valued at 2185, matter taken under advisement.
Baker County faces a looming cattle market crisis as hundreds of cattle return from summer ranges and sheep bands pressure stockmen. Low prices over three years have left the range overstocked with beef and range cattle, forcing pasturing and potential sacrifices before winter. Over 5,000 head lie within thirty miles of Baker City with few buyers, though Hindman & Moore have sold twenty carloads of yearlings to Seattle buyers.
Shareholders in the Standard mine Grant county expect dividends as the ore body expands. Portland Journal notes full crews in two main drifts and a larger than expected vein. concentration by gravity with hard sorting for cobalt grades pending a plant setup. The Sumpter Valley Railway extension is anticipated to haul ore within a year.
