Athena State Bank ceases operations as its deposits and accounts are taken over by Inland Empire Bank of Pendleton Oregon. The transfer, finalized Saturday, merges all deposits including time certificates of deposit by October 28 1926 and authorizes payment of Athena checks at the Pendleton bank. Some stockholders favored continuation, but major holders voted to close Athena State Bank.

Death ends suffering of John H. Phillips
John H. Phillips died at his Athena home after weeks of cancer suffering. Survived by wife Sarah Jane Couch, eight children, two sons and three daughters locally, plus relatives in Kansas City and Milwaukee. Funeral at Baptist church followed 30 years of church membership and peaceful faith. He was born July 19 1859 in Eldorado Springs Missouri and moved to Athena in 1918.
