Medford speaker C. G. Smith told the annual conference of high school principals that public schools overemphasize college prep and neglect vocational guidance. He urged a organized counseling plan to direct students toward training suitable to their needs, noting some schools already have programs meeting needs better than before.
Oregon State College extension poultryman H. E. Cosby says barley can partially replace corn in the poultry ration. Ground barley up to 15 percent of mash can replace about half of corn. whole barley up to 20 percent of scratch. Rolling improves performance. start by feeding barley separately for a few days. With corn imports down, Oregon barley oats and wheat offer cheaper feeding options.
The tenth Milton-Freewater apple show opens with Walla Walla Day. Fruit exhibits are larger and higher quality, with attendance beyond expectations. Mac Hi orchestra directed by Mr McKnight performs tonight, Whitman college reps attend, Red Jacket quartet led by Mrs Harold G Brownson sings, and Ruth Shangle with Mrs T C Reese perform. Weston Dayton may appear. Saturday features Waitsburg juvenile band and Waitsburg male quartet returning after last year’s success.

Faculty Miss Careron attended the UW Oregon football game in Portland Saturday. A student body meeting October 15 approved a pep rally for October 16 with strong turnout and high spirit. The group marched from the high school through downtown led by yell leader Toughie Murphy. Alumni Curtis Duffield hunted nearby Touchet. Marjorie Wilson visited Pendleton.
Fred Singer Solista Pickett Emery Rogers and Coach Miller attended the Pendleton Toucher game on Saturday. Ralph Moore Ben Marquis Land Jenkins in Pendleton last week. George Pittman drove to Walla Walla Saturday. Marjorie Montague and Marjorie Douglas with Aileen Myrick were in Walla Walla Sunday. The Glee club rehearses for the play and the band and orchestra show weekly progress with new members joining. Mr Tilley plans wind and reed instrument ensemble work soon.
Athena defeated Weston 12 to 6 with Hansell scoring the opening TD and Jenkins adding a second on a double reverse. Athena travels to Kennewick for a game this afternoon.
