Mr Gillenbeck, a salesman at Athena Department Store, observed a woman with her 15 year old daughter shoplifting items including silver knives and forks, a night gown and stockings. He stopped the thief, had her searched by a clerk, and warned her to avoid the store in the future. Her husband arrived as the search proceeded.
State Game Warden R O Stevenson announced Saturday the appointment of two deputy wardens to replace O F Turner. James Kates and Doc Maple of Pendleton will patrol vast territory and assist with goose hunting along the Columbia River. Both men were strongly recommended by local sportsmen and are expected to strengthen enforcement to protect game during the closed season. Capt Dan Morgan Smith, famed orator against Prohibition, will speak at the opera house next Tuesday on Prohibition Farce. He will argue against the liquor question in a widely anticipated talk.

From Salem county reports Hugh McLain of Coos County wins the Democratic nomination for railroad commissioner with 3987 votes to Charles P. Strain of Umatilla with 1207. Strain carried only Umatilla Tillamook Sherman and Morrow. McLain carried the rest. These figures are unofficial but fairly accurate.
A vote of 898 to 218 adopts the commission form, renaming Baker City to Baker. New mayor and two commissioners will govern, with specified salaries bonds and four year terms. Officials take office in December and faces recall and initiative powers.
An unsuccessful bank robbery attempt occurred Monday night at Hermiston Bank & Trust. The would be thief left tools including gloves and a saw behind. Tracks suggest a lone operator used an old ladder to access the roof, drill a hole, and search for the vault but fled before finishing. Evangelist S.M. Martin to hold church meetings mid November at the Christian church, recalling eight years ago. J.N. Stove, Milton Fruit Growers union agent, returned from three months in the middle west with positive fruit markets news for the union and growers.
George Arnott a leading woolbuyer in the northwest who has long used Pendleton as his base died by his own hand in his room at the Hotel Pendleton. The death ends a lengthy career noted for his influence in wool trade circles and regional commerce.
A Chinaman named Helder was robbed on Alta Street Monday evening. He was knocked down and relieved of 240 dollars. Police have identified two suspects but have not pressed charges or tied them to the crime.
W H Dillworth a veteran state newspaper man killed himself at his Enterprise home after months of grief over the drowning of his two sons. He had shown signs of mental distress, sold his stake in the Enterprise News-Record, and had confided in friends before shooting himself following a midnight confrontation with his wife and a seance belief.
Ben F Hill manager of the Oregon mobber company and secretary of the Pendleton Commercial association will accept the democratic nomination for joint representative to oppose Republican I J Mahoovy. Announcement to this effort appeared in the Mint Oregonian after weeks of consideration. Hill will run due to broad support and his business interests require attention. Also noted: W W Atfield's jury verdict of guilty on embezzlement from Pacific Express. he plans to appeal to the supreme court.
