Swine Company Promises Big Gifts to Farmers

Oregon farmers in Umatilla Morrow and Grant counties face a suspected swine company scheme offering high priced gifts in exchange for contracts to sell back gilts. Miss Bateman left Thursday after noon November 22 to attend the annual University of Oregon homecoming in Eugene. She enjoyed a football game parade luncheon and rally. Miss Bryant with Mr and Mrs Harold Fredrick traveled by car to Pendleton Friday evening.

The school held Friday morning assembly November 23 led by Eldon Myrick. Mrs. Ralph McEwen substituted for Miss Bateman during songs. Whitman college debaters visited November 26 arguing Mussolini benefited Italy. the school voted in favor.

Three to four members of the Bridge club gathered at Mrs. Ravella Lieuvall’s country home Thursday afternoon marking the first reunion since the club’s organization. Chrysanthemums adorned the rooms and refreshments were served. Mrs. C. L. McFadden won high score and Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton received the consolation prize.

Mrs. M. L. Watts entertained Athena Bridge Club members at a Thanksgiving luncheon at the Walla Walla Country Club. Colorful autumn flowers decorated the hall. After lunch guests played bridge. Mrs. Fred Kershaw had high score and Mrs. R. B. McEwen received the consolation. Mrs. S. J. Bowles was the sole guest apart from members.

Aged Trail Blazer Ezra Meeker Dies Not Yet

Ezra Meeker the 97 year old pioneer of the Pacific Northwest lies seriously ill in a Seattle hotel. Doctors say his condition is critical and unlikely to improve, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side and a last farewell expected within hours. Meeker has long paced the Oregon Trail and received President Roosevelt after his 1906 journey.

Voters Defeat Union High Tax Proposal

The Union High School District No. 7 election saw the tax proposal rejected two to one. A total of 101 votes were cast with 34 in favor and 67 opposed. Polls opened at 2 PM and closed at 7 PM. the election board consisted of five women.

Pheasants Released From Pendleton Game Farm

Marion Hansell and Glenn Dudley led a release of 216 China pheasants from the state game farm near Pendleton. With a state game farm employee, they delivered the birds in crates by auto truck and liberated them at selected tracts offering cover and feeding range.

Banister Reports Strong Wheat Yield At Cold Springs Ranch

Banister of Cold Springs ranch says his fall sown wheat is up and looks fine. He threshed 600 acres this fall and averaged just over 97 bushels per acre before disposing of the crop.
