Present-Day "Turk" of Mexican Breed in Thanksgiving History
A 20th century reflection notes the loss of early Massachusetts game birds once common to Pilgrim sustenance. Turkeys, once seen in flocks up to hundreds, vanished due to ruthless slaughter, with the last Massachusetts wild turkey recorded 1850 51 on Mount Tom. Ornithologists trace today s Thanksgiving birds to the Mexican turkey rather than true descendants of wild origins.
