Streets And Roads Improve Athena Macadamizes Main Street
The city rock crusher is silent after Morebal Gholsof laid off crews. Over 500 yards of crushed rock were used, with 131 yards on lower Main Street extending from the O R and NP tracks westward, making the entire length macadamized and in first class condition. The county used 256 yards to cover the road from the new steel bridge to the hill north of the McArthur place. Some critique the covering method, noting oil overfill can loosen the rock and produce mud in wet weather. About 100 yards of rock remains to fill low spots, with work underway at the quarry. Nearby, Ward purchased more land and wheat rising in Umatilla county. Mr Kirk plans a California visit, leaving Athena soon.

37 Years in the County Pioneer Farmer T. J. Kirk
Hon. T. J. Kirk of Athena visited Pendleton to arrange his winter trip to Los Angeles. A longtime Umatilla County farmer since 1871 he plans to keep winters in southern California among orange groves and eucalyptus trees. He bought 160 acres near Athena for 800 dollars then.

Obituary: Mrs Barger Dies at Home Near Helix
Mrs. Barger formerly Miss Hmn Green died Saturday at her home near Helix. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Monday forenoon with large attendance. Burial at Walla Walla, romains taken by train Monday afternoon. She left a husband and two young children. she was a former school teacher.

Vault for Oregon Pioneer to be built at Athena Cemetery
Workmen will finish a flat vault in the Athena Cemetery near the Odd Fellows lot for B. F. Mansfield, a Rogue River Indian War veteran. The iron lining is riveted at McEwen's. concrete walls will enclose it with a marble slab for inscription. Mansfield recalls burial fears and chose the concrete vault after seeing its use elsewhere. He was born in 1835 in Knox County Illinois? and came to Oregon in 1868, becoming a carpenter and contractor. he married Emma Mosier in 1878, who died the following year and is buried in Walla Walla. Mr Mansfield resides with his twin Frank Mansfield. he is a Democrat. Also, Dr. Sponogle returns from an eastern visit to Hartington, Ind.

W. W. Bonwell a laborer, chose a grim end by laying before Passenger train No. 7 Pendleton bound for the Walla Walla valley. The engineer saw a form, applied air, but the train could not be stopped in time. Bonwell died after being taken to St. Mary's hospital, with authorities noting possible suicide linked to personal woes.
