George W Gross Dies. Athena Pioneer Had Long Civic Ties

George W. Gross, pioneer and prominent Athena resident, died at College Place sanitarium Wednesday at 1 40 pm. Funeral services were at Metthquist Episcopal church and at the Athena cemetery. He was 84, born March 10 1860 in Adell Iowa and came to Oregon in 1881. Survived by wife two daughters Mrs Arthur Douglas and Meg Read and one son Fred, plus siblings and half-siblings. He served as Athena mayor and city councilman and was a longtime Odd Fellow.

Former Athena Resident Visits in City Amid Family Health

Mrs Sadie Buel, once of Athena, visits her mother Grandma Barto in frail health. She now lives in San Francisco with daughter Sylvia, a bookkeeper, while another daughter Willamay resides in Reno with her husband.

Two Men Escape From County Jail Barn Breakout

Two men Burke and Herers escaped from the county jail via the barn Sunday morning. Burke, charged with passing forged checks, remained at large after the break. Herers, a Mexican, robbed the Palmers Junction post office and was recaptured later on the railway east of Pun t Nethy.

Ugham Springs Open Attracts Large Crowd Despite Weather

A large crowd gathered for the Ugham Springs open event at Pinebon Springs despite poor weather. Road slickness caused several auto incidents including one near Weaton where a vehicle skidded into a ditch, but no serious injuries were reported.

Freewater Farmer George W Smiley Ends Life by Hanging

Freewater resident George W Smiley a well known former prosperous farmer hanged himself Monday night at his home following long illness affecting him and his wife. He was 60 years old, lived in Freewater 20 years, survived by his widow and two sons Charles Smiley and George W Smiley Jr. Coryner Brown was summoned but no inquest was held.

Jeanette Manasse Schwarz, 45, died at her California home after a heart attack. She was born in Athena and survived by husband, mother Gertrude Manasse, brother Herbert Manasse of San Francisco, and three daughters Henrietta Minnie and Helen Schwarz. Funeral services were held in San Francisco.
