President Coolidge signed an order to appoint state and local police as federal prohibition officers provoking senate opposition. The move targets California initially and may extend slowly to rural areas, with no plans to arm large city police as dry agents.
More than 120 of 200 indicted rum runners fled after a federal grand jury leak was reported. The group spanned the navy, Canada, eastern states, and involved coast guard officers, a Seattle police captain, a county sheriff, and others connected to government alcohol permits.
In Sulphur Springs Governor Miriam A Ferguson challenged opponent Moody to vote bargains in the primary. Ferguson said she would resign if Moody sent 25 000 votes. Moody accepted the wager in San Antonio as Texas gubernatorial campaign tension rises.
Abd el Krim fled northwest with his family as French troops occupied Fez Targuist and surrounding territory without resistance. His exact location became unknown amid tribal defections and negotiations with French command. Oregon man wins at oratorical meet in Moscow Idaho. Ralph Bailey of the University of Oregon captured the $100 prize with his talk Heroes In the Battle of Life.
The county reports wide use of carbon bisulphide on Thompson and Pambrun farms to kill morning glory growth without harming soil. Four ounces per hole, 18 inch depth, holes two feet apart, create a gas that penetrates one and a half feet. Cantrel Randolph Frazier, a Walla Walla valley pioneer who arrived in California in 1853 and settled the area in 1864, died around noon Monday at his home at age 94. He was renowned for his work in fruit and nut tree cultivation, with many walnut and other hardwood trees in the valley traced to his plantings since 1865.
The local W. C. T. U. hosted a Thursday reception at the Christian church with Mrs. Cowan presiding. Pendleton visitor Mrs. A. F. May spoke briefly while performances by Mrs. Otha Reeder, Mrs. D. T. Stone, Betty Eager, and Margaret Lee entertained. Mrs. Halph Haynie led patriotic songs and refreshments were served by Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. H. H. Hill.
A large 80 by 150 foot plot at the Veterans' hospital in Walla Walla is set aside for a flower garden mainly for rose culture. The American Legion auxiliary at Toppenish has sent a shipment of plants valued at 92.
The Walla Walla Union reports spring nights were cooler this year despite no frost damage. Twenty two observed nights with temperatures at or below 32 occurred this season across fourteen stations, versus fourteen last year, with Washington stations colder and Oregon warmer.
The Methodist group gathered Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. W. C. Read's residence. Spring flowers adorned the rooms as devotional services ended with songs. Mite box offerings were collected, and refreshments followed in two courses. Hostess aides were Mesdames W. McPherson J. E. Froom Fred Gross and Miss Gladys McLeod. Twenty one ladies attended.

William H. Reeder formerly a leading wheat raiser in the Athena district died at his Tacoma home on Wednesday after a period of declining health. His son Otho left Athena for his bedside. funeral services are planned in Tacoma with interment in the family mausoleum beside his son Claude. Survived by his widow, a daughter near Tacoma, and son O H Reeder of Athena. estate included wheat lands west of Athena and properties around Tacoma. amputated a year ago due to foot infection.
Mrs John Pierce died at the family home south of Athena Tuesday morning aged 45 after two years of declining health and a brief illness. She leaves husband three sons and two daughters. Formerly Miss Mattie Lynn, she lived in Athena before marriage about twenty three years ago. Funeral held at Miller's funeral parlor yesterday at 1 30 p m with interment in Athena cemetery.
Tomorrow night shows The Light of Western Stars based on Zane Grey. Sunday night Paramount presents Not So Long Ago. Next week Sally O Neill in Mike occupies Wednesday and Thursday. Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26, The Sea Beast plays at Standard Theatre.
A frost hit parts of the Athena district Monday night with vegetation in low-lying areas, especially potato plants, nipped but no serious damage reported.
Miss Charlotte Gross and Claud Dickenson wed at high noon in Fred Gross home on Fifth street. Rev W E of Weston officiated as guests from the families attended. The couple will reside in the Gross home after a weekend in Walla Walla.
Farm relief legislation faced a setback as the Haugen price stabilization bill failed 212 to 167 in the lower house. The Tincher credit plan and the Curtis-Aswell commodity marketing measure were withdrawn, leaving the calendar cleared for farm proposals. Rep Tilson said the agriculture committee would decide next steps.
County library lists new three month loan titles at Athena branch. Authors include Aldrich, Mason, Alexander, Fang of the Forest, Ames Lone Hand, Benefield Chicken Wagon Family, Bojer Pilgrimage, Boyd Samuel Drummond, Chap man John Crewe, Dawson Old Youth, Ertz Afternoon, Fedden Peacock's Tail, Grayson Adventures in Understanding, Harrison Andrew Bride of Paris, Oskinson Wild Harvest.
At the Pioneer picnic in Weston on June fifth Athena will be represented with readings by Ralph McEwen Jr. and an exhibition of the Charleston by Edwin McEwen. The Etude club provides a trio performing There Little Girl Dont Cry. Mrs. David Stone Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton and Mrs. Ralph McEwen present musical numbers. Mrs. Stone and Mrs. McEwen sing together and solo selections by Mrs. Stone are planned.
A Washington special reports Oregon will get a large portion of the 7.5 million federal road fund for national forests in 1927. Oregon’s allotment totals 1,097,077 with 580,591 for highways and 516,486 for road development. Idaho receives 1,142,413, California 1,089,385, and Washington 577,170.
A series of three crashes in the east end of the county last week left one dead and three injured. Henry Anderson died from the injuries after brakes failed on a grade near Milton. Norman McEwen and Bethel Miller of Milton suffered serious injuries when a car went over an embankment near the George Winn place on Dry Creek. D. F. Crane sustained a scalp wound after being struck by an inter urban car in Milton. W. S. Munsell and Elsie Kimbrell of Milton were in a second collision causing moderate damage to both vehicles.
Centered with roses a luncheon was hosted at Mrs M M Johns home at one o'clock on Wednesday in honor of Mrs Mollie Danner s birthday. Loyal Berean class members and guests from Milton Pendleton and nearby towns attended including Mrs A M Johnson Mrs FE A Dudley and many others. Mrs Stone also celebrated a birthday the day before and received a gift from the class.
At the home of Mr and Mrs C M Fager Betty Eager celebrated her twelfth birthday with twelve friends. Games and fun followed, a cake candle numbered to show her age was served with ice cream, and she received many gifts from guests Marjorie Douglas Marjorie Montague Lucile Barrett Goldie Miller Arlene Myrick Leland Jenkins Howard Reeder George Pittman Roland Wilson Emory Rogers and Robert Lae.

House leaders say the chamber rejected the measure 212 to 167 and two years ago 224 to 154, showing disapproval of such legislation. Northwest votes split with Idaho favoring the bill and Oregon officials split among Sinnott Crumpacker Hawley Summers Hill, while Johnson alone voted to kill.
In Washington the insurgent bloc and Democratic minority unite to probe campaign expenditures in primaries and general elections. The inquiry will start after Congress adjourns and run through the summer into the November vote, with Oregon Senator McNary named to head the committee after Maine Senator Fornald declined.
Northwest apple growers allege Department of Agriculture actions to curb sale of apples with arsenic spray residues are harming the market. New York and Washington dealers were told shipments from the Northwest had excessive arsenic and would be barred unless residues were wiped down.
