The recorder to notify pipe manufacturers and copies to be forwarded. Water prospects praised as springs flow steadily and a major intake area near the reservoir is being developed.

McGinn Seen as Leading Judge Choice for Oregon

Henry McGinn is favored to be appointed to succeed the late Charles B. Bellinger as district judge for Oregon if a decision comes within days. Four Multnomah County circuit judges telegraphed Roosevelt supporting him, with other judges and officials urging his claims. No Whisky for Indians Declared by Judge in Idaho

Judge Beatty of the federal court will continue liquor case hearings on the Nez Perce reservation. He cites past Supreme Court interpretation and differing land deed status between the New Perce and other reservations. The 1887 treaty, running 26 years, is cited as preventing Congress from nullifying liquor restrictions on the reservation.

Vogel Held On Horse Stealing Charge In Eastern Oregon

Dr J W Vogel a traveling ocalist once active in Eastern Oregon and Athena and now jailed in Pomeroy Washington faces a horse stealing charge filed by W W Smith of La Grande. Vogel said he held a contract for the horse and cried over the arrest after a county jail night. He previously practiced in the state and used the local paper as an advertising medium without payment.

Umatilla County Exhibit Nears Completion for Fair

The Tribune reports Umatilla county’s Lewis and Clark fair display nears completion. Commissioner Foreshaw notes many exhibitors are slow, urging those planning displays to bring materials to his shop. Byers’ mill, the woolen mill and scouring mill are assigned. A mantle feature designed by Architect Troutman will be placed, free of cost. County Judge Bean may leave for Portland in September.

Referendum petitions filed over general appropriation bill

The petitions for the referendum were filed with the secretary of state Tuesday but withdrawn for a certification error. They were resubmitted Wednesday within the constitutional time limit. Signatures totaled 7018, minus 1503 from Multnomah County not properly certified. The required total was 4680, and M H Hendrick of Yamhill County delayed filing to ensure full correction. If delay harms the effort, the Evening on Hand will be placed on the ballot.

Death of a Pioneer in Umatilla County

Mrs RB G Ginn longtime Weston Athena resident died at 6 pm Tuesday in Walla Walla after a stroke and heart trouble. Survived by children Rob ert Ginn Moro Mrs John Morrison British Columbia Mrs William Elliott Walla Walla Mrs Thomas Thompson Pendleton Mrs Minnie Hatley and Walter George Ginn Weston. Remains were brought by special train and buried at Kees Cemetery at noon yesterday.

Bailed for Jalisco and San Francisco endorsements

In a May 16 letter from J H Raulstone of San Francisco to H J Bickers, inquiries into the Jalisco company affirmed it as bona fide with land holdings at Pons. Passengers on the same steamer included Mason McCoy of Walla Walla and four Lewiston residents. J J Clark also boarded. The steamer is due soon and telegraphic updates will follow.

Shipping Strawberries From Freewater Figures Rising

About fifty crates of strawberries were shipped from Freewater in the past week with the Walla Walla Produce Company as the largest shipper, paying four dollars per crate. Berries are opening rapidly after a recent storm and harvest may employ 200 to 800 pickers by week’s end. The company also shipped peas at eight cents per pound and the president appointed A. S. Drewer and George W. Bibee as register and receiver at the Portland land office, moving from Oregon City.

Ringle Buys Second Hand Engine for Harvest Prep

J. K. Ringle purchased a second-hand J. J. Case engine from C. A. Barrett & Co. He plans to set up machinery near the mouth of town for the upcoming harvest, aiming to improve work efficiency.
