All-Steel Box Cars for U P Reach New Stage of Steel Rails

Omaha Union Pacific shops produce two sample all steel box cars from motive power designs. Steel cars offer greater cubic capacity and safety, weighing 47,800 pounds, with lower repair needs and more durable service. One 15 inch center sill supports double steel flooring, sides and ends use riveted steel, and doors are reinforced. Steel car differs from wooden by 4.5 inches in width and 2 inches in height, same 40 foot length but 50 more cubic feet capacity.

County to Use Steel Bridges on Umatilla County Roads

Sinty feet span near Town City Rock Crusher to crush rock for piers and abutments. County plans steel bridges with stone and concrete abutments and piers. Moses Taylor, Weston pioneer, befriended Henry Witzingerode a life prisoner known as Dutch Henry. Taylor secured a pardon push and brought the aged man to his Weston home for the rest of his life, after promising to care for him if Chamberlain pardoned him. Federal Judge Wolverton in Portland holds that Oregon dower and courtesy laws extend to Umatilla reservation allotments. Another Blue Ledge deposit draws mining interest near Grants Pass

A new copper gold belt on Elk creek between the Rogue and Umpqua rivers at 1600 to 4000 feet elevation attracts miners. Ten miles from the Southern Pacific line and 12 miles from the Medford Crater Lake railway, 30 to 40 claims plotted with 15 to 20 foot wide ore bodies testing 8 to 8 per cent copper and 2 to 12 dollars per ton in gold. Brakeman Johnson Killed After Train Accident

Early today on a W and C railroad special train at Hillsdale J E Johnson a brakeman recently discharged from the army fell beneath a gondola wheel. He bound his wounds with torn jer a and directed mates how to lift him. He died after reaching Pendleton. Relatives in Walla Walla and Nebraska. Right leg ground to the knee and thigh amputated. Left foot and leg crushed above the ankle.

The Walla Walla Valley Traction company weighing an interurban line extension from Walla Walla to Weston and Pendleton, while negotiating to buy the Umatilla Electric Light and Power company led by president Robert Jamieson. A Weston plant site on the Umatilla river near 14 miles south of Weston could supply several thousand barg power, but existing Northwestern power distribution reduces urge to own a local plant.
