A 30 carload mountain potato shipment to Athena grows to 40 carloads with Seattle buyers and warehouse tracking, while local auctions, road work, and a political meeting endorse Barrett’s faction and plan a June Portland convention slate. A mishap leaves Miss Maude Clark with hip injuries after a saddle incident. Public notices cover Caledonian picnic plans and races with purses.
Governor Chamberlain, a Democratic candidate for U S Senator, spoke at the opera house this afternoon at 1:80 and earlier opened his county campaign with a speech at Adams then Weston. He plans speeches tonight at Freawater Milton and tomorrow at 2:30 P M at the county court house in Pendleton then Kobo to close his county tour. Also notes a silver wedding in Athena and local baseball between Shamrocks and Sluggers.
The O R and N company with Oregon Agricultural College promotes a farming demonstration train touring Sherman Gilliam Morrow and Umatilla counties. It will reach Athena May 14 at 12 15 pm lectures 1 15 to 2 15 then depart for Adams and Pendleton. Lectures cover livestock fruit growing crop rotation moisture and culture methods delivered by college faculty. The northwest’s first such train has drawn praise for farmer benefits.
Albert Murray a young quarter treed raised on the Umatilla Indian reservation faces penitentiary time after a Tuesday night break in at the Corner Saloon where he robbed the cash register netting about ten dollars. Murray lied to officers and implicated traveler Hadkey who was freed after not tied to the crime. Andrew Picard may know more but was released. District Attorney Phelpa questioned Murray and he was bound over to Judge Beau and jailed last night by Officer O Harra. Bank cashier resignation at Farmers Bank Weston B B Hall resigns after three years to relocate to Spokane. He cited his wife's health and plans for business there. Dr Fitzmaurice a famed Irish humorist and lecturer from Dublin Cambridge is to speak at the Pendleton opera house next Tuesday under Athens public school auspices. Admission 35 cents, kids 15.
