Farmers organize first annual picnic at Athena park
The La Mar and Athena Unions of the Farmer Cooperative Union prepare for the county union’s first annual picnic at McEwen park in Athena on Saturday May 22. Committees cover general arrangements finance program music decoration and grounds with members from La Mar Athena Pilot Rock and nearby areas. Park Proposition in Athena Strikes City Park Plan
At a Commercial Association meeting Athena leaders backed purchasing 5.1 acres from Athena Land & Trust Co for 867 dollars as a city park. A public subscription plan was rejected in favor of a tax levy financed by a joint note from local property owners. The land lies in Richard’s Grove near Main Street and would be held in trust for park use until the city votes to take over.

Enthusiastic Athena boosters fill Masonic Hall as President Hawke opens the second meeting of the re organized Commercial Association. Proposals for meeting rooms vary from furnished spaces at 6 60 a month to unfurnished Main Street options at 7 a month and 8 a month with janitor services. The group selects Masonic Hall, plans stationary and advertising, solicits funds for publicity, and considers membership fees to be decided next Tuesday. A joint note for 8670 is authorized to secure city park land from the Athena Land and Development Company with signatures gathered by Miller Froome Boyd and Taylor.
