Pendleton Band Visits Athena For County Publicity Talk

A Pendleton Commercial Association brass band visited Athena on a Wednesday forenoon. Will M. Peterson spoke on a new law allowing counties to levy up to a half mill for advertising and distributing literature about agricultural and commercial resources. Athena hosts welcomed visitors and distributed publicity literature while petitions were circulated.

Pilot Rock Urges County Track Meet in Athena May 14

Pilot Rock seeks to organize athletic and oratorical entities after formation of Umatilla County Athletic and Oratorical association. Athena Commercial Club offers a 76 dollar silver cup for top school in debate, funds a tract for the event site, and plans a countywide tryout. Secretary circulates literature, aims for a strong county turnout, special railroad rates, and potential Pendleton trains for the social meet backed by Frank K. Wallos and county officials.

Methodist Ministers Convene at Athena District Session

The Walla Walla District Ministerial Association met at the Athena Methodist Episcopal church this week with about 90 delegates from Oregon Washington and Idaho. A banquet hosted by the Athena Commercial Club and women of the church followed by sermons and toasts highlighted the program.

Pendleton Wins Sunday Baseball Game 6 to 2

Pendleton won Sundays game 6 to 2 before a large crowd at the new grounds. Athena led early but Pendleton pulled away with three fourth inning runs aided by three errors and a stolen base. Stone pitched well after the first inning as Pendleton’s offense broke through to secure the victory.

City Park Bought by Athena City Council Unanimous

The Athena city council voted to purchase City Park from N A Miller for 1165.80 including interest and park improvements. Mayor McEnoo appointed a Park committee of B B Richards W J Ghor gon and Robert Goppock with support from former Commercial Association members to oversee management.

Water Commission Meeting Highlights Debt and Script Debate

The water commissioners met in regular session last evening led by Superintendent Gholson who reported $169 in cash collected for water rents with $54 more expected. Script valued at $64 could not be reported as cash. discussion with Commissioner Taylor and Councilman Barrett clarified sinking fund entries and arrears. A $250 warrant was approved to apply toward a first national bank note for the new pump and motor, with several small bills listed. Will Talley of Tacoma is reported dead. Mrs Chas Hall travels to Tacoma in response.
