Early attempts failed to compete with Sweden and Turkey but led to glassworks in Jamestown and later North America. Agluse works planned, interrupted by 1622 Indian massacre. An airnt glass factory at Temple New Hampshire started 1780 by Robert Hewes, staffed by 82 German deserters. Plant destroyed by fire in 1781. By 1808 a glass theory established in Howton and the industry has since then flourished.
