Reports from Athena say cattle are dying in large numbers on foothill ranges southeast of town as six inches of snow falls after a season of scarce forage. Stockmen exhausted feed, with some stockman noting eleven deaths in a few hours. John Thompson headed to investigate conditions near the Ryan grade.
The Democratic county central committee met at Pendleton’s courthouse to set primaries for April 7 and the county convention for April 12. Delegates are allocated by one per 10 votes from the 1902 attorney general race, with one at large, totaling 236 delegates.
London reports a Tokyo dispatch that on March 22 the Japanese fleet renewed an effort to bottle Port Arthur. Sixteen warships escorted seven merchant steamers to the harbor mouth, the steamers entering under bombardment and sinking in position. Three hundred Japanese officers volunteered for the duty, with the official report awaited.
Denver March 4. Stockmen of the west backed by the National Livestock Association seek to establish an independent packing plant to challenge the beef trust. They have taken an option on the Jacob Dold packing plant in Kansas City, held by Vice President L. F. Wilson and Treasurer F. W. Flato with a ten year lease. The Dold plant can slaughter 2000 cattle, 4000 hogs, and as many sheep daily, enough to handle the stockmen’s anticipated business.
Washington reports Portland dispatch shows Charles Cunningham Eastern Oregon stockman and six homesteaders indicted for conspiracy in land fraud probe. Indictments target dummy defendants Ana Rey buro Glen Saling Shelley Jones Mark Briakleford Dallas O'Hara Kate James. some suspects yet to be arrested. Judge Hartman and Joe Parkes expected as witnesses. Also notes Dr A B Stone opening new Post Building office and Maccabees convention plan to spend 60000 on Lewis and Clark fair fraternal hall. Faust production features a transformation scene of Faust and Satan.
Joseph Boucher was seriously injured on the O R N at Thorn Hollow near Pendleton while attempting to board a freight car. He slipped under train No 24 and lost his left arm, later being taken to St Anthony's hospital. Doctors expect he will survive. The report also notes substantial estate values and bankruptcy issues involving the Wade estate. Athena theater announces Why Women Sin with performances March 26 and Athena band rehearsals resume with seasoned players.
Workmen await weather to begin construction on a large electric power plant at the Walla Walla site. A Barrett reports all machinery, wire, poles and materials contracted. $250000 set for plant cost. six mile flume 48 inches diameter will carry water to power site, with over 600 feet fall.
Portland figures dispute T. A. Wood's status as Indian War Veteran and vow removal from grand commander post. Bennett Camp No 8 in Salen passes resolutions disavowing him and urges other camps to join in the effort.
Women of La Grande push a city rest room for farmers and country visitors. Backed by women’s clubs, the project aims to be ready by spring with seats reading material water and lunch tables. Republicans set April primaries for the county and plan conventions on April 9. Frank Lockwood reports a two headed calf and taxidermy plans. Also offers free government land information by mail.
