The Athena tailor Conley begins glove making in the city to meet rising demand for cotton gloves priced at 10 cents a pair. He employs four women sewing at Mall Street, pays 16 cents per dozen, and plans six or more sewing machines with electric motors to boost output.
Disorganized Athena base ball scene with scant attendance at a Saturday meeting. Opinion favors fundraising by subscription to field an amateur team, players ready for practice but a manager is wanted. A Moses is sought to lead the Colts, but no leader yet. Season has begun and nearby towns are playing.
Harry Martin, 84, failed 44 year quest for mother lode in Canyon Creek. He died by suicide last Saturday, body found buried under earth and rock near his cabin two miles south of Canyon City. A note left said he was dead at 1 am. search party found his body after odor of powder appeared at the mouth of an old drift. Coroner's inquest noted a rifle trigger tied with string.
A city council meeting discussed a near beer license with broad support but differing views on the license level. Mayor McEwen announced standing committees for the term as the ordinance committee prepared a draft ordinance for the next session.

The death by own action theory haunts the case of John Gosh a 72 year old bachelor found in a mill race near Pendleton after a day of reported mental distress. He had sought a forced mortgage on property worth 3000 and was said to be pursued by a strange woman. Gosh disappeared late Saturday and two children found his body in the mill race. The scene includes lost clothing and unclear valuables. local teachers in training and nursing exams are noted, with several Pendleton residents receiving certificates or diplomas. A fifth artesian well on the Blalock Farm supplied water at high flow.
