Inland Empire Wheat Growers vote to buy sacks via association

Pendleton meeting approves forming an association to secure grain bags from importers at about 9 14 cents and to sign contracts for more than 60 000 sacks. Report urges collective purchasing for 1907 harvest, aiming half a million to a million sacks at a favorable net price. Church Debt Paid Off After Revival Meetings End

The Christian church in Athena closed six to seven weeks of revival with a crowd at capacity and 48 accessions by baptism or letter. The debt was raised in 15 minutes using a bricks-and-dollar-amount visual, reducing the debt to 1377.50 including interest, and the church and parsonage are now debt free. Evangelist F. E. Billington and Pastor Haven led the meetings. Billington departs for Cottage Grove.

Firemen Ball Set For Friday March Fifteen 1907

Athena fire department gears up for its annual ball on Friday evening March 15 in lieu of St Patrick’s Day falling on Sunday. Three fire companies plan a top party with music, courteous floor managers, and careful arrangements to ensure a large attendance. Civic improvement movement gains pace in Milton

A year into the civic improvement drive begun at Milton, the city council met Monday night and ordered street grading and sidewalk improvements estimated at 4080 to be undertaken.

Stockton Merchant Arrives From Chicago to Visit Sister

Albert Cohen, a Portland area merchant, arrived Sunday in Stockton to visit his sister Mrs. Edward Manasso. He recently traveled from Chicago where he bought goods for his store in Stockton. The note recounts his prior mercantile work in Pendleton and Walla Walla and mentions his garden city shop Sterling Teams. Sharnes Brotherton heads four O R and N teams aiding road bed repairs washed out between Hastland and Havana at $5.50 per day each.

Fruit inspector offers spraying guidance to county growers

Howard Evane the county fruit inspector says he cannot inspect every orchard before spraying season ends due to the large area. He urges orchard owners to cooperate, notes better fruit and higher prices with proper care, and provides a winter or spring spray formula using quinine, sulfur, salt, water, lime, and heat to achieve a deep blood red mass. He invites farmers to mail questions to Milton for prompt replies.

Caledonians Meet Saturday in Umatilla City

Daniel McKenzie secretary of the Umatilla County Caledonian Society announces a Saturday meeting in the city at 2 o clock. Topics include business matters and the potential annual Caledonian picnic. Athena hopes the society decides to hold the picnic in Umatilla County with a warm welcome and social support. Taylor for Mayor Announces Candidacy in Church

Independent candidate David Taylor announces his bid for mayor at a Christian church union temperance meeting. Charles Betts, listed for council, withdraws after believing a full ticket would oppose the regular slate. Taylor continues, while Betts claims he was led to expect a full slate. Betts had been serving as a judge of election.

Change of Agents Today at O R N Go and Ranch Sale

This morning J B. Dobie loan agent for the O R N G O transferred the Athena office to E M Smith from Walla Walla with Dobie departing for Northern Pacific. Smith brings railroad experience and has Ranching ties in Crook county near Mr and Mrs N H Pinkerton. Smith notes Athena's growth since 19 years ago and recalls 1888 Centerville days with J H Kelley. E M Lockwood of Walla Walla, formerly Helix, bought W A Ferguson’s 240 acre Mudreek ranch for 18000, among the region’s largest recent land deals.
