A severe accident on aSaturday afternoon cost Will Potts his left hand when his sleeve caught in a pump gear while starting a gasoline engine to pump water. His wife helped stop the engine and with his uncle and doctors’ care he endured the operation and recovery, with the arm amputated halfway between wrist and elbow at Pendleton.
The Oregon census estimates a state population of 675,879 with a net gain of 262,438. Mul nomah County may become a separate district as field enumeration continues, with official counts not expected until October. Nationally, a 20-seat increase in Congress is anticipated.
Census supervisors report a ten year pre census period ending near 1890 with 95,886 people living in homes in Oregon and 188,642 residents in 114 incorporated towns. The large workload focused on cities and towns during the current enumeration.
The annual school selection is set for Monday at 2 p m at the schoolhouse. Notices have been posted. Taxpayers are urged to attend and vote for one school director and one clerk and participate in any business before the meeting. B B Richards seeks re election. Henry Keen is named for director. Charles Botts seeks reelection as clerk.
EB W MeQomas of Northwestern Warehouse and McComas predict strong harvest in Umatilla County. About 200000 acres of wheat with rising spring sowing and favorable spring rains may yield 6,000,000 bushels at roughly 25 bushels per acre. Barley seen at 40 bu per acre, totaling about 400000 bushels from 10k acres, with early harvest expected if weather holds.
West and Pendleton dropped season’s end games to the Jenders in Benday play. Athena fell 4 0 to Mountaineers while Pendleton beat the Sheepherders 9 2. A large crowd saw Weston’s late rallies and Wheeler’s strong pitching as Githens’ errors aided Groves and Wheeler scoring. Athena visits Pendleton Sunday and Pilot Rock visits Weston.
Prof L R Alderman argues that civilization rests on the home and that schools should actively support home industrial work. He describes simple, low cost methods to credit home tasks in school records, include garden and animal care, and foster cooperation between parents, teachers, and pupils to build whole child development.
After a bitter contest, Freewater voters approve a sweeping victory for the dry forces. The common council may, by ordinance, close near beer establishments, billiard halls, pool rooms, and card rooms. Total votes 114, with the dry side winning by 81 to 33.
Professor Baker, formerly principal at the Gresham school, was elected principal of Athena High School last night by the board. He comes highly recommended and backed by state officials and county superintendents. The meeting also included a private discussion after H G Case tendered his resignation from the local fruit ranch era.
The supreme court will deny Mike Ryan a rabouring and the convicted slayer of Edward Dixon will be taken to Salem to serve seven years in the state penitentiary. He must pay a $2,000 fine. He owns wheat land northwest of Athena mortgaged for $5,000. With fines and costs, he will have little left. He is over 60.
Ben G Hold of the Walla Walla Commercial club says inland lines from Portland to the southern Inland Empire towns will see discriminatory rates from Oregon reduced by railroad actions. The issue concerns Oregon rate cuts and the impact on Walla Walla business, with J N Stone returning to Milton after touring Spokane and Butte Country. He plans to monitor Milton fruit markets and the district’s shipments to the Central states.
Mrs Claud Steen wife of Claude Steen died Tuesday afternoon in a Walla Walla hospital from complications of blood poisoning following an appendicitis operation. She was well known locally and highly regarded. She leaves four young children.
