Price Wins the Case Against O R N Company

T. J. Price sued the Oregon Rail and Navigation Company for 2000 damages over a water overflow caused by a culvert near Weston. The jury awarded 925 as damages. Other cases noted include Baker County versus Sheriff Huntington with a 10000 bond issue and a rioting charge against Moses Taylor. Trials continue in Baker County with judges and attorneys named.

Runaway Cart Injures Stockman Ryan Near Dell

Michael Ryan, a stockman, was badly cut and injured in a runaway accident while driving a team north of town. A. J. Wagner helped bring him to town. he was later moved to Pendleton hospital. Wounds included a deep throat cut and injuries to the right side of the body.

Deceptive Robbery Suspects Held After Athena Arrest

Two Kano men acting deaf and dumb were arrested by Officer Gholson on a robbery complaint from Eph Williams. Williams, who had $27, reported missing his pocketbook after a bar outing. Authorities found 75 cents on one suspect. the other had no money. The men traveled from the west and feigned impairment, prompting suspicions from witnesses. A potential homicide link was raised by a cross-notice in the La Grande Observer about a man killed near Hilgard after colliding with freight No. 65, possibly connected to the same two men.

Washington Chosen for Russo Japanese Peace Talks Seat

The American capital Washington was selected as the conference seat for the Russo Japanese peace talks. Secretary Loch announced at the White House that plenipotentiaries from both nations will be named soon and a date for the conference is expected to be set.

Indictment Against Senator Mitchell Goes to Trial

Senator John A. Mitchell pleads not guilty as Judge De Haven overrules his demurrer to the federal indictment accusing him of procuring timber claims fees via an agreement with Frederick A. Kribs. A 200-name jury panel is drawn for the June 20 trial.
