A large fire at Lowell Rogers on the reservation destroyed the cook wagon and a horse, scorched about 600 sacks of wheat, and burned over 140 acres of barley stubble and standing grain. Firefighters battled intense heat after a weekend blaze extended from stubble into standing crops, causing extensive losses and insurance protection for the owners.

Eastern Oregon farmers along the Malheur river now pledge to cooperate with the Beeson and the government. If they comply they will pay $3 per acre per year for 10 years to obtain water from government reservoirs, after which control will pass to water users.
Portland reports a swift shutdown of public gambling houses when Sheriff Ward ordered all games closed between 4 30 and 6 pm. Roulettes stopped as owners, workers, and players were dismissed, about 70 people expected to lose work amid mourning on the streets. Witnesses include W Markell B Quackenbush and W F Edwards of the Municipal association.
The State hotel safe was robbed around midnight, $136.25 in checks and coins taken. Clerk Darice, a stranger to the city, disappeared after asking bartenders to guard the office. Owner Koonts found the safe later and counted $196.25 missing. A vagrant is sought for arrest as details emerge.
James G. Wilson of Portland, attorney for the O R and N Co, visited Athena to contest the council action opening Garfield, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets. He said the move to condemn and open streets on company property is irregular and may be brought to court. The council, empowered by a charter amendment, appointed viewers who found no damage to the company.
William Timm and Celia Burns faced a court challenge from Fred Kyle over their living arrangement. They were jailed, then moved to Pendleton where they obtained a marriage license and married, marking a late but happy union.
In Walla Walla on July 25 a veteran sexton Pardon Doe Bentley and his wife plan their gravesite markers both reading humorous lines. The two stones will be erected on a vacant lot in the city cemetery where Bentley has long managed the municipal section. The cemetery covers 40 acres with about 6000 graves. five graveyards serve the city Catholic Masonic IOOF and Chinese communities. Lilicos stomach tablets are advertised for sale by druggists.
