July 14 Walla Walla faces a record water shortage as hot weather looms. City Engineer Clark has shut flush tanks to minimum and may cut street sprinkling and lawn taps next. Officials warn reservoir levels are dangerously low and could jeopardize flushing and household use.
Asa Le Grow of Walla Walla a cashier at the First National bank is dangerously ill in a Portland hospital with heart trouble. He has been unwell for some time and is reported in a critical condition. His daughter Mrs. R. D. Walsh and son Fay have stayed with him, while another daughter Mrs. J. S. Winn went to Portland Saturday night. The report references health concerns and family care from Oregon sources.
From New Chwang to Chee Foo and St. Petersburg reports on July 14 detail Japanese success at Kinchow and Kashigon near the Tien Thio rail line. Private advices note a spirited engagement near Kai Chou with large forces in action, while dispatches cite modest Russian losses and heavy Japanese casualties.

Work grading Third and Fourth streets for three blocks from Main to College is complete and crushed rock used to fill around the O R and N depot. Athena now has three of the best streets in the state outside Portland, and the city is praised for finishing before heavy wheat hauling begins.
Pendleton July 15 Fire broke out in the residence of Fred Langever shortly after 12:30 this morning. Before help arrived the flames advanced. the kitchen was badly burned and other rooms charred. Furniture destroyed and damage placed at $2,000 mostly insured. Langever family away at Lehman springs. fire likely incendiary as no one had been in the house for over a week.
News from Pendleton states Charles McNichols an Indian inspector of Arizona has been appointed bonded superintendent of the Umatilla agency to replace Agent Wilkins who resigned earlier. Charles Robinson remains as clerk. Senator Mitchell reportedly recommended Allen A. Cunningham of Salem as successor inspector to McNicholas.
Two of the men charged in the killing of Davin and Eyrand’s sheep, and in threatening herder J Rabail, have been arrested and are held on 250 bail in Pendleton. Harry Kelly was captured by Sheriff Taylor, with Deputy Blakley bringing in William Wood for an immediate hearing. The herder said three men were involved, but only two have been arrested so far.
In New York on July 18 a meat strike expanded with 34 hundred butchers and employees joining. Police protection was requested and granted as packers boosted meat prices by two cents per pound. Kept peace in stockyards with hundreds of police nearby.
Turbulent storms July 12 cause severe property destruction along Willow and Hinton creeks in Heppner. In Mitchell, a flood 25 feet high devastates the canyon, drowning Martin Smith and Mrs Bethune, wrecking twenty eight canyon-bottom buildings as residents flee to higher ground.
