County assessor Strain warns that O R and N taxes remain unpaid, urging immediate court action and possible hiring of a lawyer to settle railway tax disputes. He cites last year’s O R and N taxes totaling $50,000 and notes the board of equalization will soon reconvene to finalize the year’s assessment.
David Stik, a noted threshing machine operator, has patented a draper attachment about 24 feet long and 8 feet wide to replace hoe downs. Straw is dumped into nets, distributed by four forks like chinameo, then fed to a self feeder. The draper speed is adjustable and powered by a traction engine, requiring only one overseer. The device is protected by a U S patent office caveat.
The Preston Parton Milling Co will start construction this week on a new complex. The existing mill will be moved to the south end of the warehouse, raised for an adjacent apartment, and top additions will expand all departments. Old machinery will be removed. new improved equipment will be installed, signaling a major era for Athena and Umatilla County. Mr D H Preston is on site to handle wheat dealings and welcomes friends at his Firat National Bank office.

Harvest work starts across the wheat belt with grain banks ripening satisfactorily. First cutting began two weeks ago in Cold Springs country. farmers elsewhere gear up this week. Wheat quality and average yields per acre appear higher than last year, with Umafilla County reporting an especially strong start.
The big Eagle carnival at Pendleton opened amid a dust storm that bluffed the showmen from performing. Last night's company displays were praised as among the best of its kind on the Pacific coast. Wednesday and Saturday are noted as the big carnival days with Eagles showcasing top stunts.
W. A. Holmes of the O R N bridge crew was struck on the head with a shovel by M. J. Crane at Peadleton during sidewalk repairs. Holmes sustained a scalp gash and skull fracture and is in hospital after surgery. Crane not yet arrested as deputies await injury outcome. incident arose after a sidewalk collapse injuring Cane.
Telegram informs Bert Cartano of sister Anna Cartano's death at her Springville home after illness and a return from Athena. In Pendleton, Deputies Taylor and Blakely head to the cattle sheep clash scene with warrants for three men involved in dog attacks on sheep, while G C White pleads guilty to cattle stealing and is sentenced to two and a half years. co defendant Young Duffy remains free on bond.
A petition filed by W. P. Leach and others seeks to reroute the old Scrivener road east of Weston to run around the lull rather than over it. A remonstrance was filed by Law Caplinger and others. County commissioners heard arguments for and against the proposed change on Saturday afternoon.
